Son of Noverre storms to win Gr 2 York Stakes

By: Storm Again   July 24 , 2010

The Sohna Stud Farm has already raised the profile of Indian bloodstock by buying one of the most fashionable stallions to stand in India. Noverre`s first crop in India is being bought by high profile owners who aim to win the plums in the country. Noverre has caught the imagination of race horse owners and those who follow the pedigree trends in the country.

With a number of got abroad mares strengthening the breeding operations of the young stud farm which has already made a big splash on Indian racing, the victory of Summit Surge, another son of Noverre in the Gr 2 York Stakes on Saturday was further confirmation of the fact that the stallion is going to make impact on Indian racing. For owner Sultan Singh, every victory of the progeny of Noverre only adds to the excitement of having made the right purchase and heightened expectation on the first crop of Noverre which will race from next November.

Summit Surge came from the rear of the field to record a thrilling victory in the Gr.2 York Stakes, the only Stakes race at York yesterday. The winner finished strongly to beat Bushman (Maria`s Mon) and win by one and a quarter lengths. The son of Noverre was second in a Gr.2 event in Italy on his last start and has won Group races in each of his last two seasons.

Bred by Norelands Bloodstock and a Tattersalls December Foal and DBS St Leger graduate, he is from a Stakes winning North American family. Formerly trained by Ger Lyons and now in the care of Luca Cumani, he could run next in the Gr.3 Rose of Lancaster Stakes if the going is fast.

Noverre has already made waves through his progeny abroad who have won a host of graded races. The illustrious list is headed by last year`s French Derby winner Le Havre who is now standing as a stallion in France and Music Show who beat the best three year old fillies including Lille Langtry who had won the Gr 1 Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot and English 1000 Guineas winner Special Duty in the Etihad Airways Falmouth Stakes (Group 1) earlier this month.

Summit is more reason to regret Noverre sale: Summit Surge gave further cause to regret the decision of Darley to sell his sire Noverre to stand in India by gaining the most important success of his career in the Group 2 Sky Bet York Stakes, writes Racing Post.

Summit Surge (Noverre) was held up towards the back of the field, while the fancied Bushman (Maria`s Mon) tracked the leader Monitor Closely (Oasis Dream). Summit Surge began to make headway two furlongs out before taking the lead and staying on well in the closing stages to win his third Group race, following victories in the Gr.3 Amethyst Stakes in May 2009 and the Gr.3 Ballycorus Stakes in 2008.

Summit Surge is a half-brother to five winners from as many runners produced by the Sunshine Forever mare Lady Peculiar. She was a winner in Canada and is among six successful offspring produced by Lady Regency (Vice Regent), who was a Stakes winner and multiple Stakesplaced in North America. The third dam, Funny Peculiar (Funny Fellow), won at Listed level and was Gr.3-placed both in Ireland and North America, and is responsible for three other winners, including Happy I Am (I`m Glad), who has 22 victories in North America to his name. Lady Peculiar has a yearling colt by Majestic Missile.
