Kallu Mama wins untested in feature

By: Tippu Sultan   December 8 , 2013

Vittal Deshmukh trained Kallu Mama recorded an encore over seven furlongs winning the Ch V Lakshmi Prasad Rao `Sardesai` Sircilla Memorial Cup, a terms race for three year olds and upwards, the feature event of races held at Malakpet on Sunday. Jockey Pradeep Chouhan enjoyed a good day booting home a treble.

Kallu Mama had been ambitiously campaigned in the Mysore Derby but after a disastrous run, had been brought back in distance. The got-abroad gelding seems to be enjoying the seven furlong trip as Chouhan kept him relaxed in about the fifth or sixth position as Silver Crown and Lumiere Blanche did the front running. The wide false rails at the bend opens up on the inside in the straight and gives an opportunity for those looking for a run along the rails if the horses have the tactical speed to do so. Kallu Mama swiftly moved places along the rails and although the gap was narrow, he was good enough to take it and bounce away from his rivals in the final furlong. Handsome Hunk came up with a late rally to finish second ahead of Santa Monica while the long time leaders tired and faded out of sight.

Faisal Hassan trained Panachecorn was strongly backed to win the 1000 metres Birthday Girl Plate, a race for two year olds. The favourite hit the front from the start and had no problem in steering clear of Dear Friend in the straight to win by a widening margin of five lengths, giving jockey Chouhan an arm chair ride to victory.

Laxman Singh`s Vijays Splendour who was being tried over nine furlongs for the first time in the Bobbili Plate (Div I), a Category III race, nearly succeeded in his runaway tactics but was beaten in the closing strides of the race by favourite Big Move who gave some anxious moments to his supporters till he overhauled the front runner. Jockey Deep Shanker`s tactics of bolting with the lesser fancied runner appeared to have come off when the three year old colt had a break of about five lengths going into the final furlong. However, the front running sapped his energy close home and Big Move was able to get past him in nick of time. Lesser fancied Lots of Love from the stables of Shezad Abbas won the lower division of the race sweeping past the front runners inside the final 300 metres and sped away for an easy win over Rio Rojo and favourite Roma Rouge who was not up to justifying favouritism unable to cover the leeway that she had given to the eventual winner.

Vijays Grandeour won the 1400 metres Satavahana Cup, a Category III race, with a strong rally on the wide outside getting the better of favourite Skylight Express close home. Skylight Express had a useful lead going into the final furlong and when Vijays Grandeour drifted out alarmingly under pressure, things looked difficult for the latter. However, Chouhan did not panic and rode out Vijays Splendour without changing course. Vijays Splendour responded gamely to get the nod in the end. Chocolate Solider was a tame third.

In a cluster finish, Srinagesh trained Hard Kingdom flew in the middle and managed to win the Flying Treasure Plate (Div I), a Category II race, by a whisker from late finishing Robust who literally overhauled all the runners barring one from his position at the back. Favourite Al Sarrah, Speed Striker and Wedding Gift were all in the cluster and finished in the order mentioned. In a similar finish, Commanche Gold managed to put his head in front at the post to win the lower division of the race. Melody Queen along the rails stole a march over the rest inside the final 200 metres but lost in the dying moments of the race to Commanche Gold who covered good ground and managed to get the photo in his favour. Drayton also came home with a rush to get the slot ahead of Mukhtar who was in contention till the closing stages of the race.
