Murioi wins the "mock race" in near record timing!

By: Frankel   January 9 , 2014

Ganapathy trained Murioi who is the highest rated four year old in the country scared away his challengers for the traditional lead up race to the Indian Derby, the Gr 2 Ramnarain Ruia Gold Cup, a race over 2000 metres, the feature event of Thursday`s Mumbai races. However, despite having to race against himself, the son of Dubawi fractionally missed bettering the record for this distance set by Set Alight, with the jockey hardly having to move a muscle.

Apart from pace maker Mars the only other bonafide runner was Pesi Shroff trained Swashbuckler to race against Murioi though he has several formidable horses which he chose to keep it for the big occasion by preparing them through a softer route. Possibly the jinx that the winner of this race rarely wins the Derby may have weighed on his and other trainers` mind. Mars set the pace as Murioi was eased in second position followed by Swashbuckler. Importantly, Murioi showed lot of maturity while settling down. Rounding the final turn, the pace picked up with Murioi and the struggling Swashbuckler surging ahead of the pace setter. Murioi left his lone pursuer stranded as he sped away for an effortless win by a widening margin of eight lengths. Had the jockey extended the horse even slightly, the course record could have been his. On the basis of this performance, Murioi looks invincible in the Indian Derby barring the uncertainties associated with the sport. Jeremiah will have a lot to catch up with in terms of cruising and eventual speed.

There were three horses which had strong chance to claim the 1000 metres Indian Air Force Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 66 namely Mykonos, War Horse and Intesar on the basis of their last efforts. However, Fontanelle, despite being raced against his pedigree which suggests that he would be happier tackling longer trips, was strongly backed to win. Mykonos was well placed to strike going into the final furlong but War Horse who lacked early speed, maneuvered his way through openings that materialized on the inside and shot ahead. Fontanelle flattered to deceive while the weight was telling on Mykonos. War Horse could not carry his lead to the winning post as Intesar gathered steam on the wide outside and in the bobbing of heads, got the verdict by a whisker.

Nirad Karanjawalla trained Vixen who had recorded an impressive win last time out was backed to the exclusion of the rest in the 1000 metres Cardinal Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Rajsamman who had run an unexpended third in his last run was surprisingly ignored in the betting ring. The five kg allowance claimed on Rajsamman at once made him an outstanding proposition though the wide draw was a matter of concern. Rajsamman moved swiftly from the widest draw and went ahead. He had the race sewn up long way from home with long shot Three Roses finishing second ahead of Adios Amigo. Altaf Hussain`s Scarlet of Hope showed plenty of zest from the wide draw and shot into the lead and kept on expanding it to win easily from favourite Tempest and Blue Bay, the lower division of the race. Blue Bay appeared to be in contention going into the final 200 metres but weakened. Tempest came from a long way back to snatch the runner up berth.

With the odds drifting out on Constantine, Speed King who was tracking well was backed down to favouritism in the 1200 metres Continual Plate, a race for three year olds. Great Expectation did the front running with Constantine settled in third position along the rails while Speed King who jumped outwards at the start, moving quickly to recover lost ground and come into striking position. With Great Expectation weakening, Constantine slipped into the lead along the rails and shaped like a winner but inside the final 100 metres, began to wilt as Rule Downunder came up with great rush. The latter managed to get past Constantine in the final moments of the race to win at lucrative odds. Great Expectation was a suggestive third. Speed King gave a poor account of himself.

B Prakash trained Malkia brought off a big upset in the 1400 metres Warsaw Pact Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Song Saa cruised into prominence in the straight but failed to sustain his flourish beyond the final furlong as Malkia came home with a big run on the wide outside and got past the front runner with hardly any resistance from the favourite. Fabulous Florence was prominent right through before settling for the third slot. Malesh Narredu trained Superlicious obliged as a favourite in the lower division of the race in the hands of jockey Suraj Narredu. The favourite made a successful start to finish dash with hardly any threat from the others. Samba Warrior finished second ahead of Fleetwood Mac while the fancied Archimedes was a tame fourth.

Bezan Chenoy`s Wentworth proved a stout stayer as the four year old swamped the opposition in the 2400 metres General Obaidullah Khan Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 to 86. The progeny of Multidimensional left the field stranded as he won by a widening margin of eight lengths over Antonius Maximus while the third placed Mountain Force was farther away.

Suraj had a double for the day as he drove out Established Predator to contain the challenge of Tuscania and late rallying Adams Prince to win the 1400 metres Perceived Value Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category.
