Knight of Ke slams opposition in feature

By: Frankel   April 12 , 2014

Pesi Shroff trained Knight of Ke slammed the opposition with a start to finish mission in the 1600 metres Girl From Ipanema Plate, a race for horses rated 60 to 86, the feature event of Saturday`s races. Shroff had a profitable day saddling three winners through Peritomoreno, Mine For Ever and Knight of Ke, the last named making amends for letting down as a favourite last time out.

How jockeys can make or mar a race was evident by the performance of Knight of Ke who had let down in the hands of five kg claimer Shammi Khan. The apprentice jockey, perhaps burdened by instructions, messed up and lost a certain race. Now running in higher category and against better lot of horses, Knight of Ke was taken on a start to finish mission by Trevor Patel and skipped clear in the final furlong to win with ease from favourite Bombardier who plodded when change of gear was required. Janis Jay was a well beaten third.

Bezan Chenoy trained Draco came in for big support in the 1200 metres Mr Greedy Trophy (Div I), a race for maiden three year olds. Mine Forever was quoted at liberal odds this time out with Starry Moment coming in for significant support in the ring. Mine Forever bolted to the front and was travelling well within herself when checking well clear of Draco who not only lugged in under pressure but lacked the wherewithal to measure a superior opponent. Beyond Intensity ran on to finish third ahead of Starry Moment who was outpaced in the early part and was not in contention in the straight.
Noshir Cama trained debutant Westphalia was backed down spiritedly in the lower division of the race though the trainer had a dismal record for the season having saddled just one winner. The others in the field perhaps did not inspire much confidence though Zodiac and Bullion Express were expected to keep the favourite busy in the race. Bullion Express chased Absolute Jewel into the straight before assuming command. The speedy son of Sprinters Cup winner Blue Horizon, Bullion Express shot away to win with ease from Zodiac who ran green under pressure. Westphalia who lacked early speed was a beaten cause well before the final bend and plodded home in third position.

M K Jadhav trained Mauna Kea who was relaxed in the rear in the 1000 metres Cotswold Arms Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65, came up with raking strides in the final furlong to easily measure favourite Habibians who choked in the second position for the third time running. Silsila necked out Ice Skate for the third slot.

When trainer Antia puts a good jockey and these horses get well backed, they invariably win. So it was in the case of Earth Orbit who received sustained support in the 1200 metres S A Wahid Plate, a race for horses rated 1 to 26. Cut Diamond led all the way and was not inclined to give up easily but slackened in sight of the post. Earth Orbit was driven out to cover the leeway and got ahead of the front runner in the closing strides of the race. Flash Drive came from a long way back to snatch the runner up berth from Cut Diamond.

The most experienced runner in the fray, eight year old Tara, proved too good in the 2000 metres Ahu Pate, a race for horses rated 1 to 26. After Annabeth expended her energy running all alone in front, Tara came into strong prominence in the final furlong and went away for an easy win over Ghanghorr and Zafirah.

Favourite Peritomoreno successfully made a start to finish dash in the 1000 metres Clifden Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Mr Morrison gave a strong chase but found the front runner unrelenting. Wiki Wiki held off Double Diamond for the third slot. Favourite Umarkot had no problem in getting the better of front running Beau Royale in the straight in the lower division of the race. Tropical Zone who was racing prominently lost his footing resulting in apprentice jockey Prasad being unseated. The jockey swiftly moved away from harm as he dragged himself to safety by going to the inside of the rails. Scalanaya finished on well from behind being a noteworthy second ahead of winds of Change.
