Supreme Star proves invincible

By: Frankel   April 13 , 2014

Malesh Narredu trained Supreme Star was driven out to victory by champion jockey Sandesh in the Gr 3 Maharaja Sir Harisinghji Trophy, a rich terms race for four year olds and over, the feature event of Sunday`s races. Races are often won and lost in the ability of jockeys to judge the pace. Supreme Star owed its easy win to his jockey Sandesh who judged the pace to a nicety and had the rest beaten for speed in the final furlong.

Since Supreme Star was going over a trip that suited him fine, he was the firm favourite. Also the terms of the race favored him as he was getting weight from horses that were lower ranked than him. In a slow run race, Zoraavar and Blue Ace set the pace followed by Rajasthan Royals and Supreme Star. Kolkata challenger Snowdrift was the in the rear group along with Manyatta and Ocean And Beyond. Approaching the final bend, Blue Ace was in distress and went very wide and was pulled up by his jockey Saddam Hussain. Sandesh quickly set alight the favourite inside the final two furlongs and the progeny of Rebuttal quickened nicely, collared the front runners and went sailing clear. Snowdrift came up with an aggressive effort while Ocean And Beyond showed up on the wide outside but was left to cover too much ground. Supreme Star spared a shade over a length to Snowdrift who ran out of ground in the end. A stronger pace or better positioning would have taken Snowdrift very close to winning.

Dallas Todywalla trained War Horse virtually carried postage stamp weight on his back and hence was backed to the exclusion of the rest to win the 1200 metres Royal Calcutta Turf Club Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above. The four year old had also won his last start impressively. After tracking Saints N Sinners into the straight, War Horse had the race sewn up in the final furlong. Though Victorious March threatened to spoil the party, War Horse pulled away in the end to record an easy win. Victorious March however took the forecast spot ahead of Rio.

A pathetic ride by jockey Neeraj Rawal ensured that Mufasa escaped to victory in the 1800 metres Misschvious Trot Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. After losing some ground at the start, Dreams of You quickly moved up to range alongside front running Hawker, with Cactus Cash in third position followed by Mufasa. Dreams of You was restrained from running freely and in the straight, the jockey had very little control on the horse as the filly veered out and in repeatedly which cost her a certain race. Mufasa who covered places on the wide outside managed to win from Dreams of You while Hawker and Cactus Cash finished in close order.

A desperate effort on the part of Sandesh to get that bit extra from favourite Brindaban failed to materialize and Celsius managed to head her home in the 1000 metres P B Avasia Plate, a race for horses rated 60 to 86. Celsius had the first run on Brindaban in the run in for home and though Brindaban came up with menacing strides, the front runner just about lasted out to win by the proverbial whisker. Emperor of France was a well beaten third.

A Jodha trained Royal Passion swamped the field in the 1600 metres J D & Peggy Banatwalla Trophy, a race for three year olds. The runaway tactics adopted by Celtic Prince came to grief in the straight as Royal Passion who tracked him all the way, bounced clear in the run in for home and won by a widening margin of nine lengths. Attraction and Theory was sighted only long after the first two runners had crossed the post.

Beyond Horizons was backed spiritedly to win the 1400 metres Kazakh Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Beyond Horizons went into lead in right earnest in the final furlong and shaped to win but was beaten in the final stride by late rallying Magic Vision. To The Moon was third while Bella Figura put up a pathetic performance.

Antia trained Ice Zone was strongly backed to win the 1400 metres Monifieth Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 66, based on the five year old gelding`s good forward run in his previous essay. C S Jodha had Ice Zone lead all the way and lasted out to win from long shots Glorious Opinion and Achieve.

Vinesh trained Sound of River brought off an upset in the 1600 metres Regal Equity Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. The five year old half brother to Pune Derby winning Phenomenale, Sound of River chased Wish Upon A Star into the straight and got stronger in the final furlong and stretched away to record a facile win. Wish Upon A Star just about held off favourite Winged King to retain the runner up berth
