Duma shows class in emphatic victory

By: Stay Thirsty   July 9 , 2014

Michael Eshwer trained Duma who had recorded a surprisingly run of the mill win last time out, showed her real class when beating the opposition pointless in the 1400 metres Kanchanganga Plate, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the main event of races held on Saturday. The only rank outsider to win during the course of the seven race programme was Virtuoso in the concluding race of the day.

Perhaps Duma was rusty when she raced last time out. She showed out in the paddock parade and this reflected in her performance. Jockey Y S Srinath had her in the rear position as Rio Grande headed the field followed by Crrisp, Bold Police and Castle King. Srinath steadily improved the position of Duma who covered the leeway on the front runners without having to stretch a muscle. In the straight, she overtook the front runners with minimum of effort. The daughter of Phoenix Tower was eased up long way from home to win by a widening margin of three lengths over Castle King who ran on from the penultimate position to take the runner up berth. Bold Police who was once a rousing a performer but a pale shadow of his former self could not make much impression while claiming the third slot ahead of Crrisp.

Spinning Chakram who was bidding for a hat-trick failed narrowly to achieve the feat in the 1600 metres T V Reddy Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 65, the highest rated trophy event of the day. Unfancied Speartooth headed the field from the start with Spinning Chakram in chase. Speartooth had a useful lead going into the final furlong but looked vulnerable as Spinning Chakram began to devour ground. However, the front runner stayed on resolutely to prevail by a neck. The rest of the runners raced far behind right from the right, with Ultimate Princess claiming the third slot ahead of Defining Moment, who after a habitual sluggish start, made some ground in the straight.

Quite often, the best horse in a race gets beat for various seasons. One such loser was last start winner Catchy Charger who lost the 1200 metres Sea Bisquit Plate, a race for maiden three year olds in a frustrating manner. Divine Love, who shot ahead on straightening for home, opened up a winning lead and by the time Catchy Charger warmed to the task, she had what proved to be a winning lead. Though the lead evaporated fast, Divine Love still headed home ahead of Catchy Charger who was easily the better horse of the day that did not win. Society Music who raced in a forward position from the start, suddenly lost pace half way through but rallied to finish third.

Virtuoso, who had last won 147 days ago, had performed poorly in his last outing, having finished 12 lengths from winner. As such, he was not reckoned to be the horse with a chance to win as evidenced by the odds quoted on him. Favourite Perfect Speed led in earnest with Aerial Acrobat in hot pursuit while Virtuoso was several lengths adrift but improving significantly all the time. Aerial Acrobat had the measure of the front runner and sped towards the post with what appeared a useful lead. However, Virtuoso flew home on the wide outside and neck out the front runner in the final moments of the race. Miss International finished third without raising hope at any stage of the race.

From a handy third position till turning for home, C V G Kishore trained Spiritual Blue showed tremendous acceleration to go storming clear and easily win the 1400 metres Manasasarovara Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Favourite Touch of Romance took a while to warm up and by the time, the three year old filly could produce a strong run, the race was in the safe keeping of the front runner. Triple Victory who held the second position weakened and was overhauled close home by Touch of Romance for the second spot.

Tandav`s aggressive run in front in the 1600 metres Ashwajaya Plate, a race for horses rated in the lowest category, came to naught when Sea Runner rapidly improved places from the final bend and managed to get the better of the front runner in sight of the post. Bigstorm came up with a strong late bid but failed to overhaul Tandav and had to settle for the third slot.

Bipin Salvi trained Real Potential made ground with a rail skimming run as the front running I Love You drifted out of a straight course, giving ample room for the former to exploit the situation and record a win after 307 days in the 1200 metres Davanagere Plate, another race for horses in the lowest category. Archer ran on strongly towards the end to get past I Love You for the runner up berth.
