Chisty, Vikash in the limelight again

By: Goldie Boy   July 22 , 2014

Trainer Bharath Singh`s 4-1 fancied runner, Double Do – ridden by R. Vaibhav -- scored a thrilling victory, in the 1,100m Zipper Cup, the feature event in Tuesday`s card. However, it was the partnership between the jockey and trainer Imran Chisty and Vikash Jaiswal which yielded fruitful results in the day`s seven-event card. The two professionals complemented each other with a fine treble, indicating they meant business throughout the season. Vijay Singh, helped by the stable jockey Christopher Alford, also saddled a brace of wins, through his hot favourites while most of fancied runners in the card justified faith bestowed in them, by their connections and punters as well.

Vaibhav, on Double Do, notched up a victory which was impressive, considering that the visiting jockey got the horse moving from the fifth berth, inside the final furlong when Adabella was in command, having shrugged off the challenge from Smooth As Silk, and also from the early leader Macedonian, the 5-2 favourite. It was a very close contest but the youthful jockey had the last word over the Vijay-trainee, ridden by Shailesh Shinde.

The Chisty-Jaiswal combinations started clicking from the second race onwards. The pair`s Do Your Best, who has had a good outing on the opening day, was backed as a good thing while early favourite, Jubilation, found no takers in the race, the 1,100m Bold Raider Handicap. The 13-10 favourite was held back behind the long time leader, Ambicka, until 300m from home before being sent into the winning lead.

Half-an-hour later, Chisty was again at work, on Vikash`s top-weighted runner, Kwan Yin, who went to the start as a joint-favourite, at 2-1, with Arti Doctor`s Essenza (Arshad Alam). However, the later proved no threat for the winner, who was held back in the mid-division in the early half of the race but galloped on resolutely on the wide of the field to score untroubled. Bharath`s long shot Hayata, who made most of the running, effectively managed to stop Dancehall Days (P. Trevor) and Essenza, rather easily at the wire.

The 1,400m Aladancer Cup was also lifted by the Chisty-Vikash combinations when their long-shot, Black Caviour, found the going easy in the eight-horse field, which also included trainer Manvinder Singh 7-10 hot favourite Cohiba. The favourite, a three-year-old who had placed a good third in the Million, last winter, tried to win from the start but ran out of gas nearing the distance post to leave the contest open for all. The outing benefit of Black Caviour, however, helped the horse`s cause. The winner was left to face some challenge from Vijay`s Blue Lightning, a 7-2 chance in the betting.
Vijay opened his season`s account with an easy victory of Almarada, in the 1,400m State Treasure Handicap. Alford took to the front on the top-weighted runner, with a marginal lead, and the 7-10 favourite kicked clear of the opposition in the home stretch.

The jockey wasn`t allowed the front-running advantage on his other hot favourite, Jalapeno Pepper, in the 1,100m Allaying Handicap. Alford had to settle the 3-10 hot-property behind the early leaders Noble Defender and Cololurful Dreams. To add to Alford`s woes, the favourite started shifting out badly in the home stretch. However, Alford did not lose the hope but kept on driving the hot favourite on the far side track to just about gain the verdict at the all-important end.

Climber, a three-year-old, performed to the expectations in the 1,200m Amorina Handicap. The horse started as a 2-1 joint-favourite with Manvendra`s Chimeric. But Arti`s charge won the race the way he liked as Arshad made no mistake on the Arabian Gulf son, who made every post of the race a winning one. Chimeric (Trevor), who placed third was asked to do a lot in the home straight as the colt was held back almost in the wrong-end of the field, until the halfway mark. In the same race, trainer Javed Khan`s Never Apart placed a good second, having also been ridden in a check in the early half of the race.
