Andreus shines as Vijay Singh scores another treble

By: Goldie Boy   August 20 , 2014

Andreus`s victory, on Wednesday, in the 1,400m Gumaan Cup, helped trainer Vijay Singh saddle yet another treble after the champion trainer`s two favourites had just about managed score in the seven-event card. The treble takes Vijay`s tally to 15, and gives Vijay a strong grip at the top of the table. It was jockey Shailesh Shinde who partnered Andreus to an easy victory while Christopher Alford was left to do the all the hard work on Vijay`s other winners – Ace Glory and Anbiorn. Trainer Javed Khan also notched up a brace of wins.

Shinde rode a well-judged race on the 17-10 favourite Andreus to claim the 1,400m Gumaan Cup, the feature event. Shooting into a four-length lead, within 300m of the start, the Placerville-Zarandja son was well in control of the race even as the six-horse field passed the distance post. The comfortable cushion of a long lead in the home stretch allowed Shinde to take things easy as trainer Bharath Singh`s pair of Star Symphony and Malpensa closed in to narrow their margin of defeat.

It was a demonstration of power-riding by jockey Christopher Alford, on each of Vijay`s other two winners -- Ace Glory and Anbiorn – in their respective events, the 1,800m Poles Apart Handicap and the 1,400m Smart Charmer Plate. Both tested skills of the aging champion rider, against his contemporaries, Shinde and Mohammed Islam. Bharath`s Shourish found himself at the receiving end, against Ac e Glory, after doing all the running while Javed`s Beyond Expectation chased the long time leader, Anbiorn, a 9-4 favourite, a stubborn customer, who didn`t wilt under pressure; though some disputed it looked like a dead-heat verdict. However, camera never lies.

However, Javed had his day all planned. The victory of the trainer`s 12-10 favourite, Style Dan, was a routine affair in the 1.600m Jujube Handicap. Apprentice Azharuddin, held back the winner, a Stardan-Star N Style colt, in the mid-division, until the 600m marker when a wide opening, along rails, made the task of the favourite`s easier. Shooting through the gap, offered by Vijay`s long time leader, albeit a tiring Fervent Quest (Shinde-up), Style Dan raced away to score over a late finishing Shivalik Shakti.

Javed`s rank-outsider Follow The Dream (apprentice Jorawar Singh-up), in contrast, scored a shocking victory, over another friendless runner, Vijay Monarch, to win he 1,200m Great Tribute Cup. Their victims included the two strongly fancied runners in the 12-horse, field -- Home Alone and War Games. War Games was always up with the frontrunners but never looked comfortable while Home Alone (apprentice Zarar Alam-up) was ridden well off the pace. It was a lucky opening along the rails which provided the Patrick Quinn-trained 9-4 favourite some solace of finishing a third. However, Follow The Dream was the best travelling horse in the end to score over trainer Arti Doctor`s top-weighted runner, Vijay Monarch, who was also among the front runners, as Torch Of Life literally bolted in front from the start of the race.

The start-to-finish victory of trainer Jasbir Singh`s Bongani was another bolt from the blue in the concluding event, the 1,100m Zeenee Handicap. Ridden by Rajinder Singh, the six-year-old mare was given a purposeful ride by the apprentice, utilizing his 4kg riding allowing allowance effectively. In the same race, Vijay`s 9-10 odd on favourite, Amarilla, found the going tough when the heat was on. Alford did bring the Multinational filly in contention in the stretch run but the four-year-old lacked the fire to counter the winner`s speed and settled for the third berth. She may have needed the run.

The afternoon started with the trainer Vikash Jaiswal`s 6-1 chance, Eternal Instinct (Vinay Jaiswal-up) winning the 1,100m Bold Dynasty Handicap. The winner was held back behind a fancied Chhundu, from Harvinder Bath`s stable, and another speedster, Thrice Blessed, until a furlong from home, before shooting into the winning lead.
