Favourites continue to set record at Malakpet

By: Tippu Sultan   August 24 , 2014

The success of well backed favourites continued unabated with fancied runners ruling the roost in the races held at Malakpet on Sunday. Donald Netto trained Galiat who had put up a good show against good quality three year olds like Silver Phantom and Supreme Fairy was backed strongly to win the 1400 metres Nawab Khaja Moinuddin Khan Memorial Cup, a race for three year olds and over, the feature event of the day. Galiat had no problem in toying with the opposition.

Audacious set a fast clip with Galiat eased in the rear with Santa Monica, Power Drive and Hidden Power ahead of him. Power Drive made the move first when he improved on the wide outside to come into contention. Jockey Imran Khan on Galiat too took the outer route which was free of any traffic congestion and within a furlong of entering the straight, had established a winning lead over Power Drive. He could ease up the favourite in the final furlong despite which he won with great ease. Santa Monica was third ahead of Hidden Power while the long time pace maker Audacious finished last.

Anant Vatsalya trained Kohinoor Grace took a long time to get into her stride and by that time Rebellion appeared to have opened up a winning lead but the latter came home a powerful finish which was sufficient to overhaul the front runner in the shadow of the post to claim the 1100 metres Diablo Plate, a race for maiden three year olds. Rubyonrails held the initiative going into final furlong but weakened with about 100 metres left in the race and had to settle for the third slot.

Three year old filly Dance To Destiny looked so superior in the 1000 metres Starsky Plate, a Category III race that punters were not prepared to look beyond her to win and made her a favourite at cramped odds despite apprentice jockey Tanwar in the saddle. Dance To Destiny shot into the lead from the start, did not face any contest from the rest of the runners and came all alone in solitary splendor. There was stiff fight for second place with Bouncer just about staving off Flying Dutchman by a whisker to keep that place.

Laxman Singh`s another ward Ivanova was also the recipient of solid support in the 1600 metres Blue Max Cup, a Category III race. Golden Essence and Ivanova kept company from the start before the latter began to assert with two furlongs left in the race. Ivanova broke away and maintained a healthy lad till going past the winning post. Star Player showed some enthusiasm towards the close by finishing third covering some leeway on the runner up.

Anupam Sharma`s Qinhuangdao finally obliged after a wait of 931 days by claiming the 1600 metres Army Cup, a Category III race at nourishing odds. After being kept a handy third along the rails as Price Warrior did the pace making, Qinhuangdao had enough opening on the outside of the front runner as the horse straightened for home and quickened well to go storming clear. Qinhuangdao had no problem in finishing in well clear of Dark Avenger and Laurel Canyon who was getting into his stride when the cause had been lost.

Shezad Abbas trained Spirited easily justified the favouritism with a start to finish mission in the 1100 metres Ongole Plate (Div II), a Category III race. Roma Rouge and Fenway Court chased the front runner a few lengths adrift without having a hope of coming anywhere near the front runner.
