Multimagic scrapes home in the Monsoon Sprint

By: Goldie Boy   August 30 , 2014

Trainer Arti Doctor`s piping hot favourite youngster, Multimagic, just about managed to beat Bullet, a seven-yerar-old, in the 1,200m Calcutta Monsoon Sprint, the star attraction, here, in Saturday`s eight-event card. A ‘head` victory for the four-year-old horse followed after the two horses fought an absorbing battle almost through the last furlong. Jockey P. Kamlesh partnered the winner. The afternoon also witnessed favourites ruling the roost in the earlier half before the less-fancied winners took over.

Multimagic, was quoted at as a 4-10 in the betting, thanks to his sprinting abilities shown against top Class horses. However, Bullet, is always known to have produced spirited runs in the terms events and his performance on the day was no flash in the pan. Last winter, over a similar sprint, the seven-year-old had also given a fright to the mighty Dandified. With Dandified having been sidelined because of a rumoured training setback, the stage appeared all set for Multimagic to pick up the cherry. The Multidimensional-Magical Romance son was taken to a start-to-finish mission but Bullet, Assassin and Adabella, who was slow into his strides, followed in close order. The threat to the favourite came 250m from home when jockey S. John brought the 8-1 outsider alongside of Multimagic and a fierce contest for supremacy started. In the end the highest rated horse, the favourite, got the judges` nod in a finish which was very exciting as Adabella had also joined the fighting pair after jockey Christopher Alford had nursed the slow starter, in the rear. The Vijay Singh-trained four-year-old filly was brought into the fray in the final 250m of the race.

Destiny had scripted a different story for Meekathara who wore a dry coat, in patches, and yet went to the start as 8-10 favourite in the upper division of the 1,100m Quincy Cup. It rained briefly after the race was over and the damage was done. The rain, however, suited Dancehall Day`s who went on to win again, having scored in a pouring rain on last occasion.

Meekathara`s race was easily bagged by Vijay`s 8-1 chance Altanza, ridden by apprentice Munna Alam. Trainer Shafiq Khan`s Meekathara (Sameer Khan-up) cornered most of the betting in the race which was also made difficult, for the favourite, by the two smart sprinters, Bongani and Gararo who dictated the terms until the top of the final turn. Meekathara, a free galloping sprinter, took over 250m from the winning post but could never kick clear of the opposition, As a result of this, he failed to offer any resistance to Altanza who jumped into the fray – having chased Meekathara, for a major part of the journey – and drew away from the field.

Vijay was again at the receiving end, thanks John`s stronger horsemanship of John, on the last outing easy winner, Dancehall Days, in the lower division of the 1,100m Quincy Cup. However, the trophy would have been Vijay`s, had Alford, atop the 13-10 favourite, Jalapeno Pepper, not been shut out for a galloping room along rails and thus forced to switch the course inside the last furlong. Dancehall Days, a 4-1 chance in the betting, led from the start and managed to ward off favourite`s late challenge in the final 50m of the race.

Trainer Patrick Quinn`s long-shot, Monsieur Strauss (B. Mahesh-up) , also wearing a dry coat, in patches, however, scored a hard-fought victory over, the John-ridden Hurricane Star, in the 1,100m Zip Off Handicap. The two horses began the fight from the start of the race, with the 8-1 chance, Monsieur Strauss, just about lasting out spare a long-neck to the Bharath Singh-trainee.

Quinn`s Lovely Magic`s victory (Surjeet Singh-up), in the curtain raiser, the 1,200m Vibrant Handicap was also gained after a close fight with the 13-10 favourite, Giocrat (B. Nikhil-up), who tried to make it pillar-to-post affair but failed in the final 100m of the race.

The victory of Bharath`s Land Of Love (Md Islam-up) was on the cards and the Tariq daughter did not make a heavy weather of it, in view of her improvement, after her last win. The 9-10 favourite made every post of the 1,100m Winfree Handicap a winning one and she drew away from the field, having established a marginal lead until the final turn.

Vijay`s another favourite, Adelino, also justified the support in the betting, scoring a back-to-back victory. The Steinbeck son, ridden by apprentice Md Javed, was given a judicious ride in the race, which also witnessed Shafiq`s Smokey Baba attracting much support but doing nothing to suggest the following. In fact, the minor place in the race fell to Vijay`s Fervent Quest who made most of the running.

Trainer Errol Bhungard`s Desert Fox (Md Azharuddin-up), the 9-4 favourite, finally, earned his corn bill, when the Burden Of Proof, like his all half kins, out of Arabian Rose, relished the middle-distance trip and won the 1,800m Vagabond Plate, the way he liked.
