Un Un Un has it easy in feature at Malakpet

By: Tippu Sultan   August 31 , 2014

R H Sequeira trained Un Un Un had it easy in the 1400 metres Prince of Berar Trophy, a Category II race, the feature event of a small card of six events that were gone through on Sunday. It is reported that a significant number of horses on the local circuit are down with laminitis which is the reason why the fields have been less. The authorities, as a result, have been unable to form a regular complement of nine races which was par for each day of racing.

Un Un Un was the shortest priced horse of the day as the three year old has been in great form and a repeat win was considered only a matter of formality. Jockey Madhu Babu took Un Un Un on a start to finish mission and the progeny of Duja kept on expanding the lead in the straight, without having to exert himself to a widening margin of over lengths over Policy Maker who headed Golden Arrow at the finish to claim the runner up berth.

Former Karnataka cricket captain and Test umpire A V Jayaprakash has been an avid racegoer and like several of his contemporaries, has passion for racing which has seen him own horses at different centres with good success. Amazing Approach proved overwhelmingly superior in the Akkanna Plate (Div I), a six furlong race for maiden three year olds. The Sequeira trained Amazing Approach quickly shot into the lead from the start and was never headed as she came home in solitary splendor. Golden Storm and Kireeti occupied the next two slots. The commentator found the names of some horses running in the race as real tongue twisters and his pronunciation was bad. The commentators need to work how to pronounce the name of a horse well before they sit to give commentary. The influence of one`s mother tongue makes it difficult to get the pronunciation right in some cases but everything can be overcome with some commitment of time. Lesser fancied Vijay Vidhata, trained by Laxman Singh, hit the front within the first furlong and had control of the lower division of the race despite veering out to the edge of the track. Vijay Vidhata spared more than two lengths to favourite Flower Roll Up who failed to get the extra gear and plodded in second slot.

Sequeira had a glorious treble with Gaarswood being part of his three winners saddled during the course of day`s action. Favourite Mukhtar had stormed into a big lead inside the final furlong in the 1000 metres Red Satin Plate, a Category II race and appeared safe but Gaarswood covered places from behind with a mincing run and got past the front runner close home. Though the margin of victory was just ΒΌ of a length, the relative superiority of the winner was much bigger.

Faisal Hassan trained Care Less Love won the 1200 metres Star Haven Cup, a Category III race at nourishing odds. On money favourite Rocking Racer led from the start but it was clear in the final furlong that he was leading on sufferance and looked vulnerable. Ponte Verdi in the middle and Care Less Love on the wide outside came home with flourishing runs which saw the latter prevail in the closing strides of the race. Rocking Racer weakened to finish third.

The biggest upset of the day was brought off by Srinivas trained Fashionista in the 1400 metres Goa Plate, a Category III race. The winner paid a handsome dividend of over 35 to 1 on a fiver! Mount Titlis led all the way but closer home slackened. Fashionista covered the leeway swiftly and she was hailed a winner well before the five year old mare overhauled the front runner as the jockey kept waving the whip in celebration as he was dead sure of winning without having to put pressure on the mare.
