Modern Sniper slams opposition

By: Tippu Sultan   September 15 , 2014

Satheesh trained Modern Sniper found favourite Vijay Viraaj too timid for comfort as he cantered home to win the 1000 metres K Srinivas Reddy Memorial Cup, a Category II race, the feature event of Monday`s races held at Malakpet. Quite often horses end up as cramped on money favourites even if they don`t deserve such a tag and Vijay Viraaj surely belonged to that category.

Modern Sniper raced keen and took over the running just before approaching the final bend and thereafter swiftly established a winning lead in the straight to go beyond the reach of Vijay Viraaj who plodded home when he needed to change gear. Modern Sniper had the credentials to win but the possible reason for the short price on Vijay Viraaj was because he had run in the Colts Championship ignoring the fact that he was coming back in distance from a mile to a scurry. Dear Friend was faraway third.

Laxman Singh trained La Tarasse swamped the opposition in the 1200 metres Swamy Ramananda Tirtha Plate, a race for maiden three year olds. Favourite Steyn Nine kept company with La Tarasse till the final bend before the jockey pulled up the horse which was in distress. Steyn Nine grinded to a halt and did not complete the course. La Tarasse in the meanwhile went storming clear from the rest who were no match and checked in by a distance over Golden Storm who necked out Save The Nation for the runner up berth.

Deep Shanker drove out Rubyonrails to a thrilling last stride win over favourite Fruit Roll Up in the 1200 metres Malvado Plate, a race for three year olds. The duo fought out the length of the final furlong with Rubyonrails getting the nod by a whisker. Jockey Imran Khan who rode the runner up put an objection against Deep Shanker for bumping in the last 20 metres. The objection was overruled as it had no substance.

Faiyaz Shaikh trained Dazzling Princess shook off front running A Horizontal Urge inside the final furlong and recorded an emphatic win in the Royal Tern Plate (Div I), a Category III race. Paying Guest covered some ground in the end to come within striking reach of A Horizontal Urge. Maid For Love brought off an upset in the lower division of the race registering a hard fought win over Concours.

There was inspired betting on Flying Dutchman in the 1200 metres Karimnagar Plate, a Category II race but the favourite was nowhere to be spotted at the busy end. Price Warrior and Mukhtar fought out all the way in the final furlong before the latter managed to get the nod at the post. Yours Truly put up a strong rally but had to be content with the third slot as she failed to get the runner up berth by a whisker.

Anant Vatsalya trained Take Stock took a while to get into rhythm in the 1400 metres Red Chieftain Cup, a Category III race but produced a strong gallop in the final furlong to get the measure of Killer Instinct in the closing strides of the race. Novaya Zemlya showed some zest while finishing third.
Rajkumar`s runaway attempt came to grief close home in the 1100 metres Hyderabad Veterinary College Diamond Jubilee Cup (Div I), a Category III race.

Midnight Paris was obviously the superior horse in the fray as the four year old gelding covered ground rapidly in the hands of apprentice jockey Sai Kiran and won with a measure of comfort. Goldie and True Heaven finished with a flourish to finish marginally ahead of long time leader Rajkumar. Anupam Sharma`s Roma Rouge had last won over a mile and as such, his chances over a scurry were not considered too bright. The fact of the matter was that he was backed confidently to oblige and the four filly did not disappoint by winning the lower division of the race narrowly from Staminoizd. C S Jodha`s superior riding skill as well as his aggressive finish enabled Roma Rouge to overcome the sharpness of trip and get the better of Staminoizd in the dying moments of the race. True Friend too came home with a rush to finish a close third.
