Sandesh drives out Bold Majesty to thrilling win

By: Stay Thirsty   October 19 , 2014

Ganapathy trained Bold Majesty who had let down huge expectations in the Deccan Derby made amends in the hands of jockey Sandesh by necking out Spreadeagle in the dying yards of the race to claim the Gr 1 Mysore Derby, the star event of the season on Sunday. The Derby and rain go hand in hand and though the authorities had sought to beat the rain by advancing the mega event by a week this year, rains soaked the track though they did not cause serious concern. Jockey Srinath reached a milestone in his successful career by booting home his 1000th winner during the course of day`s action by guiding Speed Hawk to easy win.

Spreadeagle had thrashed Bold Majesty in the Deccan Derby and was supplemented as a final entry for this race by paying a whopping final entry fee of Rs 15 lakhs. In fact, three of the six runners were in the lineup after their connections coughed up the huge final entry money. Despite Spreadeagle`s runaway win and Bold Majesty`s below par performance, the latter was backed with conviction to make amends as the latter`s defeat was attributed to the poor quality ride offered by Neeraj Rawal on the previous occasion.

Obelinna Princess led as the field set out for the 2000 metres trip with Fatal Attraction in second position ahead of Zucchero, Spreadeagle, Bold Majesty and The Artist. Spreadeagle had advanced to second position by the time the runners approached the final bend with Fatal Attraction and Zucchero dropping out of contention. In the meanwhile, Sandesh brought Bold Majesty on the wide outside to get a clear run. Spreadeagle easily sorted out Obelinna Princess inside the final 300 metres and stepped up the momentum. Bold Majesty had some leeway to cover and it looked as though back to back Derby success for Spreadeagle appeared assured. However, Spreadeagle began to slacken in the dying yards of the race even as Bold Eagle, under the relentless whipping and driving of Sandesh responded well to get the better of the front runner on the post. The success of Bold Majesty added to the growing list of classic winners sired by Usha Stud Farm`s champion stallion Multidimensional. Obelinna Princess was faraway third with Zucchero finishing fourth while The Artist found herself all at sea, unable to handle both the opposition and the going.

Srinath achieved a personal milestone in his successful career by booting home his 1000th winner during the course of the day`s action. Last outing winner Speed Hawk easily measured the front running Forest Tern in the final furlong to record an emphatic win in the 1400 metres Royal Calcutta Turf Club, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. It has been a long journey for Srinath who has battled weight problems and injuries to reach the land mark. Srinath is considered one of the best jockeys in Indian racing history with excellent big match temperament. Srinath has to his credit success in every big race in the country including the Kingfisher Bangalore Derby, Indian Derby and Invitation Cup besides many important races in the country. Srinath is also famous for his association with Sprinting sensation Oasis Star and Alaindair.

Srinath guided Darashah trained Keturah to an easy win in the 1400 metres Bangalore Turf Club Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above. In what appeared a highly competitive field, Keturah led from the start and broke into an unassailable lead in the final furlong and won with comfort from late finishing favourite I`M Different. Diamonite who was left to cover lot of leeway ran on to finish third staving off the late bid of Secret Punch.
In a battle between two horses which hadn`t won over 400 days, Prasanna Kumar trained Amistad managed to keep at bay the late flourish of Strike The Stars to win the 1600 metres Hyderabad Race Club Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 and above. Jockey Christopher failed to give adequate support to Strike The Stars as he changed course a couple of times in the straight and by the time he got the four year old going, Amistad had established a winning lead. Aumento showed some spark when finishing a close third.

The Muse had advertised her readiness to strike when she had finished a noteworthy second to Conrod. Backed to the exclusion of the rest, The Muse had the the 1200 metres RWITC Cup, a race for horses rated 40 to 65, well sewn up long way from home. Hackett ran strongly in the final furlong to finish second ahead of Miss International. Lesser fancied Catch The Eye won the lower division of the race despite drifting to the centre of the track beating Thejaguar and Snow Angel who was not ridden with the usual vigor associated with jockey S John.

Sunday Cruz was backed with conviction to oblige in the Madras Race Club Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45 but the favourite who led deep into the straight was caught up inside the distance post by the well supported Cash Is King. Prabhakaran drove out Winged King to foil Delta Delight`s start to finish bid by a nose in the lower division of the race.

S M Johnson trained Triple Victory attracted huge betting in the ring in the 1200 metres Delhi Race Club Trophy, a race for horses rated 0 to 25. Triple Victory led all the way with Queen`s Cruise ranging alongside. The duo fought all the way in the straight with Queen`s Cruise pulling it off by the proverbial whisker. Danube came home with a rush to finish an impressive third.
