Greek God halts Way Out’s winning streak

By: Frankel   October 25 , 2014

Dallas Todywalla trained prolific performer Greek God halted the winning sequence of Way Out by claiming the 1200 metres Delhi Race Club Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above which featured the long card of 10 events that were gone through on the penultimate day`s racing of Pune Racing Season on Saturday. Persistent drizzle soaked the track significantly altering the condition of the track which was firm on the inside but loose on the outer periphery making things difficult for horses which did not get a ground saving run.

Way Out had won five races in a row and going by the decisive manner with which she won her last outing, the daughter of Exceed And Excel for backed with conviction to extend her winning streak. The only cause was worry was the gap between her last run and the present one which was little more than two months. One was not sure what kept her away from the race track but her defeat served to highlight the folly of supporting such horses when running in the highest class where horses need to be at their best to win. Way Out as is her wont led from the start but her inability to quicken from the rest at the top of the straight gave indication that she would be vulnerable if faced with serious challenge from the rest. Though Victorious March, her nearest pursuer slackened, Greek God along the rails and Mint Approach on the wide outside came up with menacing runs which the favourite was unable to cope with. Greek Good which got the run along the rails managed to reach the safety of the post before Mint Approach could overhaul him. Way Out weakened to finish third. This run of Way Out has to be taken with a pinch of salt and she is sure to bounce back at Mumbai.

Pesi Shroff trained Aquamarine recorded an emphatic win in the 2000 metres Party Whip Plate, a race for three year olds. The well-bred daughter of Mastercraftsman, Aquamarine had the benefit of a mock race but perhaps what aided the cause of this dry coated horse was the weather which was cold and breezy. Aquamarine raced in a handy position till approaching the final bend before taking charge at the top of the straight and bouncing clear. Favourite Savage Beauty was in futile chase of the lesser fancied runner.

The well backed Mystic Romance had no problem in claiming the 1200 metres Hugo Plate (Div I), a race for maiden three year olds. Mystic Romance had Star Lightning stranded in the final furlong to win in fine fashion. B Prakash trained Gascony who tracked Ensign into the straight proved vastly superior to the rest as she broke away from the pack to record an easy win. Spanish Saga got the runner up berth.

Adil Dajee trained Zander completed a hat-trick of wins by winning the Kejriwal Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Jockey Y S Srinath had Zander take over the running from the start and the favourite kept increasing the lead in the straight to win as he pleased. Quick Fire ran on from behind to claim the second spot ahead of Cosmic Dancer. Presence led all the way except in the crucial yard in the lower division of the race. Shania came from a long back to nail the front running favourite in the dying moments of the race. Hidden Asset ran on to finish third without any serious intent.

Zadmal Singh trained Providence came in for sustained support to win the 1400 metres Cabriolet Plate, a race for horses rated 60 to 86. Pradeep Chouhan had to drive out the four year old filly to get the lead in the final furlong and then stave off the late bid of Desert Wings.

Ravello was widely expected to record an encore but the three year old gelding played up a lot while being loaded and refused to be stalled and was withdrawn from the fray in the Mount Rose Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 46. The absence of the favourite paved the way for last outing winner Egyptiana to enjoy an uncontested lead in front and record a facile win over As Good As Gold. The latter overcame the widest draw in the 20 horse field but lacked the spark at the finish to measure the front runner despite having all the chances. The support for Altamash trained Grand Gibraltar remained rock steady in the lower division of the race. The favourite justified the expectation with an aggressive run in the final furlong in the hands of apprentice jockey Bhawani Singh to stave off the spirited challenge of Ocean Dream. Trending slipped when making a strong bid in the final furlong but jockey Malcolm Kharadi somehow managed to stay in the saddle. Despite this hiccup, Trending ran on to finish third.

The day`s opener, the Star Shine Plate, a race for horses in the lowest class, was won by Jodha trained Adams Wing who brought off an upset. Adams Wings shot into the lead with a furlong left in the race and had no problem in finishing well clear of Guns N Roses.
