Rising Rani wins with a brilliant late rally

By: Stay Thirsty   October 29 , 2014

Monnappa trained Rising Rani came home with a brilliant burst of speed in the final furlong to overhaul Supreme in the waning yards of the race to win the 1400 metres Udhagamandalam Cup, a race for horses rated 60 and above, the feature event of concluding day`s races of the Mysore Regular Season on Wednesday. There were lessons for the authorities of MRC from the first main season as an independent turf authority on governance. Though they were not found wanting on coming down heavily on errant professionals indulging in unfair practices, lot more needs to be done and they need to adopt zero tolerance towards infractions.

The race had an open look about it with several runners in the fray having a fair chance of pulling it off. Mumbai import Catharsis who had a run benefit was well backed to win. Secret Plan, one of the fancied runners, lost all his chances by not coming out of the gates. Spinning Chakram led the field into the straight but gave way to Catharsis with Supreme hot on his heels Absolute Brave was not far behind while the eventual winner was in about the seventh or eighth position and looking to have only a slender chance. Supreme got the better of Catharsis in the final furlong and charged for home with Absolute Brave also improving places swiftly. Even as one was reconciled to Supreme recording an encore, Rising Rani produced a powerful burst to put her neck in front. Another long neck separated Supreme and Absolute Brave.

Srinivas trained Queen had a good forward run when finishing a suggestive third to Torch Bearer. Now taking on modest lot of horses and backed spiritedly to win, Queen slammed the opposition in great style to win the 1400 metres Phalguni River Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Queen steadily moved up approaching the final bend and had come into strong contention inside the final two furlongs. Bourbon Street who led the field into the straight had no answer when Queen swooped on her. Queen sped away for an effortless win over late finishing No Doubt who edged out Ohiyesa in the closing stages of the race.

Time Flies made amends for letting down expectations last time out by managing to neck out favourite alina in the closing strides of the race to win the 1200 metres Mars Orbiter Mission Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Jersey Bride shaped to win as he had a useful lead going into the final furlong but slackened close home. Time Flies made a winning rally to get the better of Salina who had in the meanwhile edged past Jersey Bride. Wrekin was sluggish at the gates.

Narayana Gowda trained Battle Empress made unbelievable improvement when swamping the field in the 1100 metres Pinakini Plate, a race for horses in the lowest class. The three year old filly had finished more than 28 lengths in her last run in the same class incidentally about 28 days ago. Now Battle Empress was surprisingly in the betting despite that doleful performance and the three year old filly had the race sewn up long way from home with a start to finish dash. Such winners are no good advertisement to the sport because those relying on form instead of SMS alerts will be left high and dry. One will be shocked if the authorities don`t look into the improved performance of the horse. The filly thus far had nine starts and all the times she had finished down the field. For Your Eyes ran on to finish second. Favourite Attractor who came in for big betting was not spotted.

Prasanna Kumar trained Kimora recorded an encore in the 1400 metres Brindavan Gardens Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45 despite racing in hopeless position for most part of the trip. It looked like the issue was going to be confined to front running Rare And Gorgeous and Zagato as these two were well ahead of the rest with Kimora improving from the rear. The race took a dramatic turn in the shadow of the post as Kimora flew home to win from Zagato and Rare And Gorgeous in a close finish. The lower division of the race was won by My Favourite Voice who swept past the front running Cute Beast in the final furlong and won pulling up from stablemate Emancipation who covered lot of ground in the straight. Come On Gingin also made rapid strides in the straight from the penultimate position to finish a noteworthy third. Favourite Thrillseeker was lost in the crowd.

From a fifth position at the final bend, Sunday Cruz moved strongly to gain control inside the distance post of the 1200 metres Mayasandra Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45 and won capably from Jaanvi and Gift of Love. Srinivas Babu`s Lake Emerald had no problem in winning the lower division of the race with a start to finish dash. The rest of the runners did not trouble the favourite as they plodded behind with Golden Wisdom edging out Mountain Splendor for the runner up berth.

Bipin Salvi`s Shades of Scarlet got the better of Stone Warrior to win the day`s opener, the 1400 metres Chitrakoota Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category and based in Mysore at nourishing odds.
