Fly Like The Win justifies her odds in the 1000 Guineas

By: Goldie Boy   November 22 , 2014

Trainer Vijay Singh`s filly, Fly By The Wind, kept her date with the first Classic of the winter season, the 1,600m Calcutta 1000 Guineas, on Saturday, with a degree of comfort. Jockey Christopher Alford, who partnered the filly, by Win Legend out of Ice Point, had the 9-10 favourite, settled a close third along the rails before shooting into the winning lead 250m from home. The afternoon`s nine event card was totally dominated by favourites, leaving a sizable race-crowd and, of course, trainers Bharath Singhand Javed Khan, wqho score a treble and a double respectively, in quite a happy frame of mind.

In the Guineas` race, trainer S. Padmanabhan`s visiting filly Aralyn – an owner-mate of the winner -- also commanded respect in the betting at 16-10 but the Razeen-Alvarita daughter was no match for the winner. In fact it was trainer Bharath Singh`s pair of Sunshine Girl, ridden well off the pace, and Sage Valley, who tested her hooves up-front, in the company Resolution, occupied the minor berths, making it a totally local affair between the Singh brothers. Aralyn placed fourth after galloping in a close attendance of the winner, until the home turn, but lacking the acceleration displayed by the most in the field of five. Vijay`s also saddled another favourite to victory when Altanza, who claimed the lower division of the Rising Star Handicap.

The 12-10 favourite, was a very slow starter, and thus, made things difficult for her jockey, apprentice Munna Alam, early in the race. However, the Multidimensional-Alvarada filly had plenty in reserves as she gained the ground to make up the leeway, and also accelerated to lead 300m from home to last out to score, albeit narrowly from the late finishing pair of Follow The Dream and Royal Scots.

Bharath, who notched up a treble, started the day with the victory of his baby, Sam Houston, in the curtain raiser, the 1,100m Kariba Plate. The 13-4 second favourite was, in fact was somewhat lucky in the race, in view of trainer Shafiq Khan`s less-fancied runner, Whispering Hope, having galloped into the pothole and when making a threatening move along rails. The filly may have broke her fetlock at that point of time as she returned dead lame. It was Khan`s Shylock who made most of the running while Manvendra Singh`s 8-10 favourite was in a hot chase as Sam Houston (Mohammed Islam-up) and Whispering Hope followed the two leader. The equation changed inside the last furlong, favouring the Bharath-winner, a colt by Lucifer Sam out of Indian Relative.

Bharath`s 6-10 hot-favourite, Kabini (Dashrath Singh-up), selected herself to score in the 1,200m Star Flame Handicap. The C.P. West daughter had placed a good second to Vijay Anbiorn who went on win again in the higher set.

Santos completed Bharath`s day`s tally while winning the division one of the 1,200m Rising Star Handicap. The Jockey A. Sandesh allowed the Burden of Proof filly to almost make it a pillar-to-post attempt to fully justify her half-money odds.

The story was no different in the case of Javed`s 6-10 hot fancy Ace Of Valour who claimed the division two of the Wheels Handicap. Held back behind Alicante and Lassy till the home turn, the Oath-daughter went about her task of winning in the hands of Shailesh Shinde.

The upper division of the race was also an easy pick for Javed`s 15-4 fancied runner, People Prime (B. Mahesh), who hardly gave any anxious moments to her backers. Ridden in a check, the Sharp Attack daughter was spotted as a winner, long way from home, while trainer Patrick Quinn`s Major Colours, who was also equally fancied, and the 16-10 course favourite, The Great Hannible, were being punished heavily.

Quinn`s another heavily fancied runner, Mephistopheles (Sandesh-up) also cut a sorry fiugure in the 1,400m Zifi Handicap. The Equitable daughter had, however, suffered a bad check, from his stable-mate Silver Silver, right after the start, followed it by chain of interference form other runners. The horse placed a poor third. All said and done, the 12-10 favourite had no chance of beating the ultimate winner, Confidence, who was almost equally fancied but won by a street in the hands of P. Kamlesh.

Quinn`s 6-1 chance in the betting, Home Alone (B. Mahesh), proved to be a savior for the stable when he claimed the 1,100m Top Most Cup. Ridden off the pace while Macedonian, Smooth and Silk and the 9-4 favourite Hurricane Star made most of the running, the Glory Of Dancer son produced a remarkable turn of foot to dash hopes of the tiring Smooth As Silk.
