Suraj excels on Godspeed in Guineas

By: Frankel   December 18 , 2014

Jockey Suraj Narredu recorded his first Indian classic win astride Godspeed by guiding the daughter of Multidimensional to a thrilling win over favourite Maisha on Thursday. What tilted the scales in favour of the Malesh Narredu trainee was the relative brilliance of jockey Suraj as contrasted with Zervan who was tentative as to when he should go all out in the straight. The fast diminishing margin of a neck at the finish highlighted the fact that with a better quality of a ride, Maisha would have maintained her supremacy over Godspeed.

Race goers` memory is fickle minded that the odds because they were prepared to wager on Maisha was odds were very cramped while that of Godspeed was too generous. When Maisha won the Fillies Championship in June at Bangalore, Godspeed was the favourite while Maisha was at long price. Since then, Godspeed had gone on to win the Bangalore Summer Million and the Deccan Fillies Championship. When Maisha and Godspeed clashed at Bangalore, the draw certainly did not favour the latter and had adverse effect on the chances of the daughter of Multidimensional and she finished . As such, going by the comparative merit of the two horses, there was no vast difference in performance capabilities between the two and the revised draw for the race helped Godspeed immensely as she got the innermost draw from what was a bad draw in the original instance. Maisha was not too badly drawn at 10.

The speedy Polydences took over the running as the field settled down for the mile long trip with Suraj easing Godspeed in the third position while Maisha was not far behind in about the fourth or fifth position. Godspeed was angled out in the straight to take her past the front running Polydences while Maisha cruised up into striking position. When Suraj went for the kill, Zervan still preferred to wait for a fraction more than was warranted. Godspeed established a marginal lead which turned out to be a winning one as she fought off resolutely to stave off the spirited bid of the favourite. The experience of Suraj and the confidence with which he is riding these days all helped in tilting the race in favour of the lesser fancied runner. Laurita who raced up with the field showed improvement while finishing third. Bangalore challenger Alexander Mills who was done in by the draw ran on to finish fourth. The rest of the runners in the fray only made up numbers. Godspeed was the first Indian classic success of Malesh Narredu as a trainer. The winner is owned by Dr Ram Shroff and Sameer H Tapia. Godspeed has the breeding to be a force to reckon with in the Indian Oaks.

The well bred Aquamarine advertised her arrival as a possible Indian Oaks contestant when she swamped the opposition in the 2000 metres Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa Area Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. The daughter of Mastercraftsman, Aquamarine steadily moved up and took over the running on turning for home and went away for an effortless win over Fleetwood Mac. The manner of winning suggested class as well as the fact that the filly will get stronger over longer trips. His Highness was faraway third.

Dallas Todywalla trained Victoria Harbour recorded a smashing win in the 1000 metres Faiz Jasdanwalla Trophy, a race for maiden two year olds. The daughter of Manjri Stud Farm resident stallion Phoenix Tower went to the front from the word `go` and was spotted a winner long way from home. Bay of Secrets edged out Kyoto for the runner up berth.

The run benefit helped Mount Rushmore as the progeny of Amadeus Wolf managed to win by a whisker over Night of Stars in the 1400 metres Yawar Rashid Trophy, a race for two year olds. Mount Rushmore showed lot of alacrity to shoot ahead inside the final two furlongs and opened up a good cushion which held her in good stead as Night of Stars finished with a big rush only to miss by the proverbial whisker. Spirited Touch had yet another useful outing finishing third.

Imtiaz Sait trained Trace who failed to live up to the promise of her debut win has now been getting into her stride as a four year old. Trance won the 1400 metres Seth Ramnath Daga Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above, with a brilliant run on the wide outside from the rear of the group to go storming clear in the final furlong. Papakura too rallied well to get the second place ahead of Mint Approach and Commander while Moon Shadow failed to live up to expectations.

Imtiaz Sait`s other ward Simply Sweet towered over the opposition by virtue of the fact that two of the horses she had beaten had gone on to record impressive wins. This made her a strong favourite to record an encore in the 1400 metres M N Nazir Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Though Simply Sweet drifted out to the centre of the track in the final furlong, she was overwhelmingly superior to the rest, sparing more than five lengths to Nature Boy who occupied the second slot ahead of Legend of the Seas.

Supertramp, who had let down a couple of times, had come down to the lowest class and readily obliged in the 1200 metres P M Rungta Gold Trophy (Div I). After tracking Without Fear well into the straight, Supertramp sped away for an easy win over Maalik and Ocean Star. Without Fear weakened to finish fourth. Mansoor Shah trained Logano was backed down to on money favouritism in the lower division and the favourite readily obliged with a comprehensive win over good Memory.

Another Mansoor Shah trained Wish Upon A Star overcame an adverse draw and pounced on the front running Burgundy Rose in the final furlong and recorded a facile win in the 1200 metres Kejriwal Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46.
