Arrogant Approach superior in Srikantadatta Trophy

  December 20 , 2014

Suleiman Attaollahi trained Arrogant Approach won the 1400 metres Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar Memorial Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of Saturday`s races despite coming back in distance. Arrogant Approach showed all the sharpness and reflexes of a middle distance runner when pouncing on the front runners on the wide outside and held off the spirited challenge of Emperor Cruise. Ace Badraan staved off a strong challenge of Castle Stuart to win the lower division of the race.

The Bangalore Turf Club recently changed an archaic condition which said the highest class races should not be divided. Earlier in the season there was a sprint race for the highest category which had 18 runners. Instead of dividing the race, four horses were balloted out to make for one race even though the next sprint race for such a category was after two months. The lowest class races where there are races week after week were regularly being divided. The reason advanced for not dividing the highest class races was that the rules did not provide for it. Thankfully, the authorities reacted swiftly to the criticism and made way for highest class races to be divided. This is the way forward be because every opportunity should be utilized for running higher category races which are not also competitive, the enhance the quality of racing in all aspects. Thus for the first time in the history of BTC Racing, we had two divisions in the 80 and above category. Both the races were well fought out giving a good advertisement to the decision.

Be that as it may, Arrogant Approach who had matched strides with good horses in classic company was obviously the superior horse in the fray except for the fact that his last run was over the grueling 2800 metres. There were some skeptics who felt that the gelding may find the switch difficult to make. In the event, Arrogant Approach who raced in about the fifth position as Ethophian set a fast pace, warmed up to the task by the time the field took the final furlong. He produced striking acceleration and has something to spare when Emperor Cruise went after him. Treasure Mount ran a forward race when finishing third, giving lucrative odds for place betting.

Aced Badraan, who is yet to reach his handicap mark, towered over the rest in the lower division of the race. There were quite a few well performed horses in the fray which ensured that Ace Badraan had to produce his best over a trip reckoned to be sharp for him to pull it off. Last start winner Castle Stuart led from the start with Ace Badraan in hot pursuit. It took almost the length of the straight for jockey Suraj Narredu to drive out Ace Badraan to get the better of Castle Stuart who put up a dogged resistance. Jersey Shore too closed with a rush along with Talisker to occupy the next two slots, with a mere two lengths separating the first four runners.

There was another 60 and above race which was also divided making way for overall good racing for the day. Sharat Kumar trained Magnitude Star and Athletic Star were both backed enthusiastically while Accuracy was the favourite in the absence of Ancient Title who was withdrawn from the fray. Magnitude Star led from the start and shaped to win but faltered in the final moments of the race which enabled the hard ridden Athletic Star to neck out the front runner who made the entire running. Accuracy disappointed with a poor performance. The lower division of the race produced an exciting finish with M P Mahaesh trained favourite Native Indian overcoming adversity in splendid manner, extricating himself from a tight position and producing a sparkling run in the final furlong to get the better of Shivalik Fire and Click. Midway through race, Audrick clipped one of the front runners and jockey Neeraj Rawal hit the turf. Native Indian was nearby but since he was hugging the rails, he could escape the adverse impact of the accident. Native Indian recorded an impressive win under strong a strong hand drive by Chouhan.

The 1800 metres Chickmagalur Nirvanappa Shetty Nanjamma TMP Cup, a race for horses rated 40 to 65, also proved competitive. The odds on Bazinga and Charming Grey kept changing throwing a confusing scenario. There was quite support for last start winner Azzurro. Charming Grey raced in a prominent position till turning for home before coming into strong contention. However, the grey failed to sustain his lead beyond the final furlong as Azzurro came up with a strong run and went away for an easy win. Big Ticket held off Czar Rule in a tight finish for the third slot. Commissariat bolted riderless while being led to the starting gates and the race was considerably delayed as a result.

The 1200 metres Amathos Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45, was another where punters were at a loss to fix their fancy as two horses were backed with great enthusiasm with the third one Atmos quietly hidden in the frenzy. Expert and first timer Dawn of Light who lacked from ready and sported bandages were backed enthusiastically. In the event, the latter failed to gain a favourable position and then even almost came down when his hind legs slipped midway through the race. Expert led all the way as is his wont but found Atmos coming at him with a big run which he was unable to tackle. The lower division of the race saw Viva Diva eclipsing favourite Dream Star in the final furlong to win at nourishing odds. Despite the trainer`s poor record with favourites, punters continued to repose faith with a horse trained by Dominic and for the second day running, they ended up losing a fortune.

Puttanna trained Areca Wonder who had the benefit of a race run, swamped the opposition in the 1100 metres Agumbe Plate, with jockey Suraj Narredu not required to move a muscle to get the favourite win as he pleased. Honor was second ahead of Revelnation.

Prithviraj trained Indian Legend left the opposition stranded in the final furlong with a strong run from behind to win the 1100 metres Gulbarga Plate, a race for lowest category horses, in tremendous fashion and at nourishing odds as well.. Western Lady who was backed to the exclusion of the rest, gave a disappointing performance.
