Padmanabhan saddles a quadruple

  December 27 , 2014

Trainer Padmanabhan dominated the day`s proceedings saddling a quadruple on Saturday. English jockey David Allan who has been a regular with Padmanabhan for the last five years was associated with three of the winners. The day`s feature went the way of Suleiman Attaollahi trained Coriolis who won the Jog Cup in ridiculously easy fashion belying the expectations of a competitive race.

Puttanna trained Garuda was yet again backed spiritedly to win the 1200 meters A P Kothavala Memorial Cup, a race for two year olds. However, Garuda disappointed, packing up after leading the field well into the straight. Debutant Sun Moon And Stars who relished the hot pace set by the favourite, produced a sparkling acceleration in the final furlong and left the rest stranded by over five lengths to win in the manner of a good quality juvenile. Heaven Is Here was second ahead of Super Success who was ridden out to ensure that the long shot landed the place money by Pradeep Chouhan.

However, his riding on Speedstress in the Summer Dust Plate (Div I) bordered on pathetic to say the least. He raced the favourite very wide and gave no chance whatsoever to justify the public expectations. If this is the quality of riding displayed by the champion jockey of India, we need foreign jockeys not withstanding their protestations. In the absence of many foreign jockeys who used to be a part of the Indian winter season, the quality of jockeys on view is very dismal as only few who are reasonably good are playing havoc with the system. For the record, Padmanabhan trained Leige Lord swamped the opposition with Sweet Angel finishing far away third. There was a big gamble on Neil Darashah trained Trojan who was backed down to favouritism despite jockey Velu being astride. The debutant went all over the place in the straight but nevertheless proved to be better than the rest winning easily from Mehrani and Cadogan.

Suleiman`s Star of Destiny readily obliged public expectations in the 1400 metres Raichur Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Star of Destiny went into the lead in the final furlong and was not hard pressed to win from Saltoro Ridge and Kingston Town. The lower division of the race produced an exciting fare, with Baracchus wining it at the expense of favourite Hendrix. The latter had recorded a runway win last time out and his repeat win was taken for granted. On the other hand, Baracchus was running after a long layoff and had even undergone a tie forward operation but there was no doubting his class as he had run against some superior quality horses in maidens` races. Though he was a non winner, he was still rated at 51. Chouhan took Hendrix on a start to finish mission and looked like a winner when Baracchus began to veer out under pressure. But the jockeyship of David Allan made the difference as he gathered the horse well and kept him on an even keel and got the desired acceleration to win by a length. Evalina and Millrose were fast closing up on the favourite who barely survived to keep the runner up berth.

Wings of Fortune was backed to the exclusion of the rest in the 1200 metres Haveri Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. On the last occasion, the horse ran at 60 to 1. How quickly his potential was gauged and made as a firm favourite was something only the Stipes can answer. What was this horse doing in the earlier runs that he could command so much betting all of a sudden? In the event, Wings of Fortune was never placed advantageously and struggled to finish third. Vigorous who was this time ridden aggressively by Chouhan had the measure of Ungoogleable to land the spoils at nourishing odds. Clueless lost considerable ground at the start.

Coriolis was backed strongly in the ring to win the 1600 metres Jog Cup, a race for horses rated 60 and above so much so that in a trice the odds shortened completely. Coriolis raced in a forward position as Mickey Mouse and Aashikaara disputed the lead but both failed to prolong their stay in front after bringing the field into the homestretch. Coriolis quickly surged ahead and went away for an effortless win. Amistad was a surprise second ahead of Evraz while Mickey Mouse finished a dismal last.

Faraz Arshad trained Stimulator who sported blinkers bolted to the front as is his wont and just about lasted out to win from late rallying Cadogan to land the spoils at nourishing odds in the 1200 metres Horanadu Plate, a race for horses rated 20 45. Spanish Moon ran on well to finish third. Favourite Rakshita was not seen in serious business.

Padmanabhan trained Tanganyika was driven out to win the 1600 metres Kemmangundi Plate, a race for lowest rated horses. Despite carrying the top weight, Tanganyika fought on resolutely to prevail over Tuscano who put up dogged resistance in front attempting start to finish tactics. Attractive Bay made her intentions late but nevertheless finished a suggestive third.
