Treasure Mountain wins in absorbing finish

  February 21 , 2015

Splendid piece of riding by jockey David Allan enabled Nityanand trained Treasure Mountain to record an absorbing win over Pentagram in the 1400 metres F K Irani Memorial Trophy , the feature event of Saturday`s Bangalore races.

Pentagram who had recorded a smashing win last time out was strongly backed to record an encore based on the quality of that win. There were a couple of seasoned performed in the fray but since Pentagram seemed to be on the upgrade, he received exclusive support, with the rest at liberal odds. Ethophian led from the start followed by Pentagram, Treasure Mountain, Castle Stuart and Jersey Shore while Czar of Romance lost considerable ground at the start.

Pentagram took over the running on straightening for home with the other three in hot pursuit. Pentagram was able to thwart the others till going into the final moments of the race. A persevering effort by Allan yielded desired results and Treasure Mountain managed to clinch the issue by a whisker.
Jersey Shore was a close third despite a poor ride while Castle Stuart failed to produce that bit extra and weakened to finish fourth.

Mickey Mouse had been playing hide and seek thus far in the season and he was presented with an excellent opportunity in the 1400 metres Shravanabelagola Cup, a race for horses rated 60 and above. There was inspired support for Royal Salute who was once a rousing performer. Chetan Kalay was hell bent on taking Mickey Mouse to the front from the word `go` and jockey Imran Khan on Royal Salute too was keen to hit the front so much so that both these horses went at scorching pace. One was left wondering whether this approach would be detrimental to their prospects. In the event, the pull in weight perhaps helped Mickey Mouse as he managed to shake off Royal Salute in the final furlong and recorded a hard fought win. Talisker ran on to finish third.

Aravind Ganapathy trained Simply Clever had won against the run of expectations last time out despite obvious lack of intent on the part of the jockey.

Since the four year old had recorded a win by a whisker, the progeny of Burden of Proof was lightly penalized. The volume of money that Simply Clever attracted in the Star of Windsor Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45, indicated the confidence of the connections. The odds on King Glorieux drifted out which itself suggested that the four year old who was coming back in distance was not seriously fancied by the connections. There was spirited betting on Hello Boss as well. After keeping Simply Clever in a striking position, jockey Trevor Patel pushed Simply Clever to take over the running inside the final 300 metres. Simply Clever instantly picked up speed and went away for an effortless win over Hello Boss and the well beaten King Glorieux.

Suleiman Attaollahi trained Assiduous attracted big money and in keeping with the market expectations, Assiduous burst clear of the pack with a furlong left in the race and won the 1200 metres Tumkur Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 40 to 65, in fine fashion. Seven of Hearts and Maddox occupied the next two slots. The lower division of the race was won by fancied Strombolite who built on her forward run. The five year old mare went on an aggressive start to finish mission and staved off the challenge of Little Love and Yellow Zone. Favourite Carducci was not up to recording an encore. Passion Flora was the betting rage in the lower division of the race but the horse was not seen in serious business, beaten from the start. Debutant Be Inspired who bolted riderless to the starting gates, nevertheless proved too good for the field, beating the challenge of Masked Marvel with great ease. Be Inspired should repeat.

On the basis of two consistent efforts, Sharat Kumar trained I Smile was backed to the exclusion of the rest in the 1200 metres Alchemy Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Favourites don`t go hand in hand with the trainer even though he might be honestly trying his horses on a few occasions. I Smile was floored by lesser fancied Cadogan who came up with a late effort to floor the favourite in the hands of jockey Deepak Patel who was seeing the winning post perhaps after an eternity.

Sharat Kumar`s wrong un was the favourite in the 1200 metres Mudabidri Plate, a race for hoses lowest category. New Victor led in earnest only to fade out in the final furlong. Honourable Princess shaped to upset but was surprised by the late flourish of long shot Emancipation.
