Evesham drubs opposition as favourites got going

By: Goldie Boy   July 22 , 2015

The victory of Evesham in Wednesday afternoon`s feature event, the 1,100m Supernova Cup, was authoritative. Although, the Tariq-Everybody Counts son failed to maintain a straight course, he managed to beat the opposition, including his last outing conqueror, Grande Dame – who struggled to place fifth, about a distance behind. Evesham a 13/10 course-favourite, was trained by Robert Gowli, in the absence of suspended Vijay Singh, and ridden by Shailesh Shinde, who finished the day with a brace of winners.

The afternoon also witnessed trainer Farley Rodrigues` lesser fancied runner, Amandas Queen (Pradeep Chauhan-up), winning the 1,400m Super Sunrise Cup while the stable fancied runner, Mephistopheles (apprentice Munna Alam), carried the public-purse. However, there was no foul play in the race as the big made horse, not only badly needed the run, the 6/4 favourite also found himself crowded along the rail-side to do anything worthwhile. Favourites, however, had a fair share of strikes in the seven-event card.

The day`s proceedings started with trainer Vikash Jaiswal`s favourite, My Commitment (Vinay Jaiswal), making every post of the 1,100m Serrafina Handicap a winning one. The victory of My Commitment was made easy with the withdrawal of the 6/4 favourite Alcante, a speedy customer.

However, trainer Javed Khan`s hot favourite, Dark Angel, proved as a big let down in the 1,400m Bold Display Cup. The 8/10 favourite, almost trailed the field from the start of the race and never improved. The race was claimed by trainer Richard Alford`s fancied runner, Murlough Bay, who followed close behind early leaders Colourful Prince, the stable-mate of the ultimate winner, and Fervent Quest, till a furlong from home before taking off for an eight-length-plus victory.

Arti Doctor-trained Sunset Sail, however, fully justified her crammed odds in the 1,400m Sweet Ellar Handicap. Settled a handy third behind Adanna and Supreme Ruler, the quarter money favourite, got into action to score comfortably over the late finishing Romancer.

Isle Of Avalone (apprentice Zarar Alam) was the other favourite, who delivered the goods in the 1,200m Cheryl Handicap. The 6/4 favourite, from trainer Errol Bhungard`s stable, allowed Temple Run and Glamorous Glory do the running, until a furlong from home before shooting into the lead and retiring as an easy winner, albeit under a doze of belting.

The baby race, the 1,200m Predator Handicap, was also an easy pick but for a friendless runner, Bold As Brass (Shailesh Shinde). The Bharath Singh-trained filly was, however, impressive in her victory, in view of her finishing prowess inspite of travelling six horses wide all the way. The Win Legend daughter flashed on the scene when Alford`s 2/1 favourite, Maharana, and Bharath`s another less-fancied runner, and the longtime leader, Zacara, were disputing the issue. In the same race, Gowli`s topweighted runner, who also attracted much support at 9/4, was up with the leaders till about the distance-post but badly failed thereafter.
