Gold Bag maintains amazing winning streak

Adhiraj Jodha trained Gold Bag maintained her amazing winning streak, extending it to four while claiming the 1200 metres J E Hughes Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 to 86, the highlight of Saturday`s Pune races. Ageless who was the firm favourite and expected to halt the winning run of Gold Bag was lethargic at the beginning and thereafter jockey Zervan did not make any desperate effort to retrieve the situation.

Since Ageless had matched strides with better class horses, she was the favourite to win especially after her gutsy win at Bangalore summer season in open company. However, Ageless resorted to her old habit of not taking a smart jump from the gate. Having been drawn on the inside, Zervan quickly resigned himself to the prospect of not being able to recover from that position and made no effort to either change course or look aggressively for a way out. Instead he sat still hoping for things to work out all by itself which did not happen and Ageless was not spotted at the busy end. Gold Bag who raced in a handy third or fourth position, accelerated tremendously and was hailed a winner well into the final furlong. In a three horse cluster finish for minor placings, Providence nosed out Egyptiana and Jimbo for the runner up berth.

Two debutants, Tonteira and Holy Smoke cornered all the betting in the 1200 metres Pune Mirror Stakes, a race for maiden three year olds. Stand And Dance who had run a suggestive second in his last outing was ignored in the betting ring as jockey J Chinoy was declared to ride which dissuaded many from backing this horse with conviction. In the event, they were soon to regret the decision as Tonteira never held good position while Holy Smoke took a fly jump. Though the last named improved position quickly, he had nothing left in the tank for the more serious business of overhauling the front runners in the straight. Stand And Dance quickly established his supremacy in the straight and comfortably held off the late challenge of Silvano to win the race at fancy odds. Victorio was third.

Jockeys were not allowed to carry whips in the 1400 metres Aerobica Plate, a race for horses rated 1 to 26. Surprisingly, Simply Shining came in for sustained support to end up as a strong favourite despite not so impressive credentials. In the event, Simply Shining took a slow start and thereafter was never in the hunt, much good money going down the drain well before the race came on the boil. Sail Past who had been backed heavily in his last outing when the gelding was withdrawn at the gates, jumped out smartly, was taken to the front by apprentice Raghuveer Singh and easily saw off the challenge of the rest. Ensign showed intent when coming up with a good run to finish second best ahead of The Other Song while the favourite was a poor fourth.

J Chinoy had a rare double for the day as apart from Stand and Dance, he was also astride the winner of 1400 metres Raphaela Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Adderley Edge brought off a big upset for trainer Waheed with aggressive running in front and was not troubled by any of the contestants. Bay of Secrets and Affirmation occupied the next two slots while last start winner Jupiter who came in for significant support, ran a pathetic race. Trevor Patel had favourite Bullion Express lead all the way and looked good to land the spoils going into the final furlong in the lower division of the race. However, he began to falter which enabled Soul Centric who was perusing him in earnest to overhaul him in the final stride of the race. The Way I Am who was also in betting, struggled for speed early on but warmed up to the task late and came home with a rush on the wide outside. Four horses figured at the finish with Soul Centric, The Way I Am, Bullion Express and Coley finishing in that order, with a short head each separating these fourth finishers.

Pesi Shroff trained Lord Jim towered over the opposition in the 1600 metres Sonalika Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. There was betting on top weighted Zana to make amends for her last start failure. Trevor had Lord Jim race in a handy second position till turning for home before storming ahead and winning with great ease over Zana. His Highness was a well beaten third.

Trevor drove out favourite Jager Bomb to get the better of Roxelana to win the 2000 metres Sans Pareil Plate, a race for horses in the lowest class. Roxelana threatened to pull off an upset when she shot into the lead after turning for home and refused to budge from there. However, the persevering effort on the part of Trevor ensured that the favourite did not disappoint. The long-time pace setter Striking Story stayed on to finish third.

Favourite Scarlet of Hope had no problem in winning the day`s opener, the 1000 metres Gruezi Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46, with a start to finish dash. The winner expanded the lead in the straight to go out of the reach of the rest. Mr Morrison necked out Passion Prince for the runner up berth.
