Arrogant Approach has it easy in Governor’s Cup

By: Stay Thirsty   October 8 , 2015

Suleiman Attollahi trained Arrogant Approach was handed the Governor`s Cup literally on a platter as the opposition to the well performed five year old comprised pretty run of the mill performers. The Dashmesh Stud Farm bred Arrogant Approach, owned by enthusiastic owners A V Jayaprakash, P S Ranganathan and T S Suresh made good use of the opportunity to add useful winning prize of over Rs 7 lakhs to its growing kitty by completing the formalities with minimum of fuss.

The timid approach of those who had hoses capable of running in this race as against the arrogant approach of the connections of the winning horse ensured that the five year old who had recently won the richly endowed Maharaja`s Cup would add another feather to his cap. Jockey Suraj Narredu rode an unhurried race, keeping the favourite in a handy striking position behind front running Obelinna Princess before pushing the on money favourite to take over the running inside the final two furlongs. Arrogant Approach smoothly accelerated past the front runner and the race ceased to be a contest once he hit the front. The other two, Miss International and Ruthba who made up the numbers, picked up useful stake money by occupying the third and fourth spots on the frame.

Neil Darashah trained Renee who had won her last outing over seven furlongs in record time was widely expected to record an encore in the 1600 metres Smt Maliniraje Prasad Memorial Trophy, a race for hoses rated 60 and above but the favourite flopped miserably. Monnappa trained Murcilago perhaps appreciated the step up in distance as he swept past the opposition on the wide outside and recorded an easy win. Favourite Renee who had shaped to oblige huge expectations by surging ahead inside the final 300 metres had no answer when Murcilago who enjoyed the pull in weights came home with a blistering turn of foot. Renee succumbed too easily for comfort. Marcus Sittikus measured Oceanic Storm for the third place.

Jockey Suraj Narredu who is credited for picking horses which generally give a bold account of themselves has been seen in poor light as for as his selection of horses or him readily agreeing to ride horses which invariably end up being favourites but let down the public badly in the ongoing Mysore season. Rare Emerald was one such who failed to reproduce the spark of last occasion when the three year old filly had recorded a facile win. Installed the favourite to win the 1200 metre Belgaum Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65, Rare Emerald was not spotted when the race came on the boil. Last start winner Jersey Bride produced a strong gallop inside the final furlong and established a good cushion. The lead that Jersey Bride established held him in god stead as Country`s Nobility came from way off the pace with a powerful burst which however went in vain as the front runner just about reached the safety of the winning post. Sufficient Proof who was in front bunch, stayed on to finish third.

Md Khan trained Alvarez recorded a repeat win with great ease in the 1400 metres Sri V B Ramachandran Memorial Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Backed spiritedly to win yet again, Alvarez was in about the fourth position at the final bend and was presented with an excellent opening along the rails as the front runners went wide. Alvarez quickly established a big lead and despite veering out, spared four lengths at the finish to One To Note and Sairani. The lower division of the race was won by another Md Khan trainee Calico Jack who covered plenty of leeway on front running Ole and recorded an easy win despite looking under pressure before he began to devour ground.

Jockey Trevor Patel was successful in the first three races of the day. Gregory Sandhu trained Shaft who was the subject matter of an enquiry at Bangalore causing the suspension of the professionals concerned, was entrusted to Trevor and was backed strongly for this reason alone in the 1200 metres Shantiniketan Plate (Div I), a race for horses in the lowest class. Shaft was driven out strongly by Trevor to measure the front running Flying Bullet who veered out under pressure but luckily did not go on to the favourite who was making the run on the wide outside. Hostess managed to pip the long-time leader Flying Bullet for the runner up berth. Sandhu`s another ward Joey had finished second best on two occasions at Bangalore and this time out, managed to thwart the bid of Reformer with great ease. Joey had lost winning opportunities with late efforts. This time, alerted to the task pretty early by Trevor, Joey hit the front inside the final furlong and had no problem in winning from Reformer and Tick Tac Toe. Touch of Romance flattered to deceive.

Favourite Kir Royal who made his run in the homestretch with a ground saving effort along the rails was in danger of being boxed for a clear run as Refreshed appeared to have stolen a march in the 1400 metres Delhi Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Trevor waited patiently for an opening to materialize instead of taking panic measures and his manoeuvre yielded rich dividends as the favourite got a dream opening on the outside of the front running. Trevor then drove out Kir Royale to get past the front runner in the final moments of the race to enable the Zari Darashah trainee to record an encore as a strong public fancy.
