Cameron wins 1000 Guineas from the start

By: Goldie Boy   November 21 , 2015

Trainer Suleiman Attaollahi`s South India challenger, Cameron, recorded a business-like performance to win the 1,600m Calcutta 1000 Guineas, on Saturday. Ridden by Trevor Patel, the Admiralofthefleet/Camarioca filly, a 4/10 piping hot favourite, won from the start. The other major races in the seven-event card, the CROS Cup and the D.R. Gupta Memorial Cup, on the hand, were picked up less-fancied winners – Stevalena and Macedonian – who were, however, form horses but received little support in the betting. The afternoon also witnessed the two popular choices – Anastasio and Arminius – recording impressive wins in their respective events.

Cameron, in the Guineas, made her task easier with a start-to-finish victory. Trevor displayed a controlled aggression in the early half of the mile circuit but released the brakes, on the hot-property, in the home-straight to maintain the advantageous lead. In the same race, trainer Vijay Singh`s Glamorously, attracted some support at the nourishing odds of 8/1 but she found it hard to neutralise Cameron`s lead in the final straight, after being settled in fourth as Arti Doctor`s Pujarin, and Vijay`s other charge, Real Presence, did all the chasing of the ultimate winner. Waveafterwave, Arti`s main hope in the Guineas placed a good third, barely three parts of a length behind Galmorously.

Trainer Javed Khan`s Macedonian (apprentice Jorawar Singh), too, did a Cameron when he carried his top-weight to victory in the 1,200m D.R. Gupta Memorial Cup. Although shifting out in the straight-course, the 7/1 shot pulled it off, though trainer Rutherford Alford` Gentle Knowledge (apprentice Ranidan Singh) and Vijay`s 2/1 favourite, Free Energy were brought into the fray with late but threatening runs.

Trainer Bharath Singh`s Stevalena (Dashrath Singh), on the other hand, found the opposition an easy prey in the 1,600m CROS Cup. Ridden in a long check, the 4/1 chance in the betting, found the early leaders – Wahaca, who burst a blood vessel, Fly With The Wind and the 7/10 hot favourite, Capt Haddock, as no match for the talented filly. Trainer Javed Khan`s Geronimo (A. Sandesh), a new acquisition from western India, too, produced an inspired run in the closing stages of the race to place marginally ahead of the favourite, ridden by Trevor.

However, Arti Bold Legacy (P. Kamlesh) was the most impressive of all winners in the afternoon`s seven card. The speedy New Famous/Hoofbeats filly not only cantered home, making every passing post of the 1,100m Romantic Eve Handicap, a winning one, she also notched up her fifth straight win. Surprisingly, Bold Legacy found very little support, in the betting ring, her odds having expanded, from 11/10 to 5/2. It was Rutherford Alford`s Hudson Hawk who was the rage of the backers. He went to the start as an even-money favourite, in view of being was an impressive winner of a 1,400m race, on the last day of the monsoon season. However, Hudson hawk was simply out-classed by Bold Legacy, from the word ‘go.` It was left Raunak Banerji`s Meekathara to produce a smart but late run to occupy the second berth, ahead of Harvinder Bath`s Analyst.

Bath`s Anastasio (Christopher Alford), too, justified her favourite tag in the 1,100 Kabuki Handicap. Her ‘ring` odds, too, expanded from 5/4 to 5/2, thanks to a huge wagering on Bharath`s Zacara but it not prove to be a deterrent for the followers of Anastasio as the speedy daughter of Varena went about her task to register an easy pillar-to-post victory.

Arminius was another one who helped Alford`s cause. The 7/10 favourite from Vijay`s stable also followed day`s trend of start-to-finish wins on her way to lifting the 1,200m Citibank Handicap. Incidentally, it was Arminius` third straight victory; which was again a promising one for the better prospects in the coming weeks.

The baby race, the 1,100m Liberty Plate, produced a real shocker in Hondo Monterey, who was hardly impressive in his paddock looks. In the same race, trainer Richard Alford`s Cielo Del Este had attracted a huge support at 8/10, thanks to the youngster`s impressive track trials. Honestly speaking, all of six youngsters in the fray needed runs and there is hardly anything to write about the race.
