Summer Dawn wins feature on day of long shots

  February 12 , 2016

Amit Cady trained Summer Dawn who had been running consistently, asserted his superiority in the 1600 metres Nethravathi Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 and above, the feature event of Friday`s Bangalore races. Most of the races were won by horses at long odds as winner picking was a hazardous guess as surface was not of much help.

In what was an open sort of betting, Summer Dawn was fancied marginally ahead of the rest. Dazzling Bay who had run in classics had good credentials though she was switching back in distance from mile and half and was entrusted to an apprentice. Dazzling Bay though was well backed as a second favourite. Tronada set the pace as the field set out for the mile-long trip and held the lead entering the homestretch. Summer Dawn who was racing in a handy fourth position till this point of time, began to improve places quickly and without much fuss overhauled the front runner and charged home with a handy lead going into the final furlong. Dazzling Bay came up with a brilliant burst of speed from way behind but could not sustain the effort till the post. Summer Dawn pulled away to win comfortably from Dazzling Bay while Alexandrite ran on to claim the third place. Last start winner Feliciana who was prominent till the bend, weakened in the straight and finished poorly.

Full brother to Admiralty, Captain Morgan was backed down as on money favourite despite making his debut in the 1400 metres Kabini Trophy, a race for maiden three year olds. Padmanabhan trained Iron Will had the benefit of two runs and his body weight showed a drop of 11 kgs which indicated that the progeny of Arazan had definitely stripped fitter. David Allan had no hesitation in taking Iron Will to the front and the second favourite travelled comfortably into the straight with a handy lead and then skipped away to win easily from late finishing Pallas. Captain Morgan who stayed in touch with the front runner till entering the straight, found the lesser fancied runner too good for comfort and struggled to pick up pace and eventually finished third.

M P Mahaesh trained Time And Space was backed to the exclusion of the rest to win the 1200 metres Murudeshwara Plate, a race for horses rated 0 to 25, on the basis of the five year old mare`s forward run last time. Apprentice jockey Surya kept the favourite in about the third or fourth position till entering the straight and then began to work on the favourite. Time And Space smoothly accelerated and swept past the front running Scorching and then stormed clear to win by a widening margin of five lengths over late finishing Emancipation who began to gallop when the race was in the safe keeping of the favourite. Shining Bay too finished on with a powerful effort to displace Scorching from the third position.

Satish Narredu trained Country`s Crown who had run in good company last time out, brought off an upset in the 1200 metres Bharachukki Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Country`s Crown floored the front running Areca Wonder with a powerful dash in the final furlong and then broke clear to record a smashing win over the pace setter. Secret Prayer managed to nose out Downton Abbey to get the runner up berth. Favourite Sun Moon And Stars who was outpaced at the start, was unable to cover the ground and ended up fourth. The filly reportedly bled during the race. The filly has had issues with her throat and had a tumour removed through a surgical procedure. The trainer and jockey combination of Satish and Suraj were also successful in the lower division of the race where Sir Majestic held off a stiff fight put up by Spanish Moon and landed the spoils as a favourite. Spanish Moon came the shortest way along the rails and engaged Sir Majestic in a stiff battle for supremacy but the former who held the edge, carried it to the winning post. Mariko who went on a start to finish dash, weakened under pressure to eventually finish third.

Puttanna trained Jersey Wonder who had won his last outing from way off the pace, readily obliged this time out in the 1400 metres Chamundi Hills Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Trevor Patel had Jersey Wonder dictate the pace from the start and the progeny of Burden of Proof skipped away from the rest in the straight to record an emphatic win. Favourite Back of Beyond edged out Royal Defence to get the runner up berth. The lower division of the race was won by long shot Montenegro who was making his debut as a four-year-old. Montenegro tracked Zaalim into the straight and then steadily gained ascendancy and broke away from the pack to register a smashing win over favourite Everybreakingmove. Zaalim weakened to finish third.

Sharat Kumar`s I Smile won the 1200 metres Gaganachukki Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45, quite capably at nourishing odds. Favourite Youre Ashwashakthi who shaped like a winner in the final furlong began to send distress signals. I Smile who was in a striking position, smoothly cruised past the front runner and recorded an easy win. Anfield rallied well to edge out Youre Ashwashakthi from the runner up position. The favourite reportedly burst his blood vessels. The lower division of the race won by rank outsider Happy Hours from the stables of Nityanand. Despite a poor quality ride by jockey Janardhan Paswan, the horse did everything to nail the favourite Cullinan in the final moments of the race. Meherani was third.
