Top Striker has walk in the park in Million

  February 13 , 2016

Inayathulla trained Top Striker swamped his three rivals enroute to picking up rich stakes of over Rs 12 lakhs of the Gr 3 Bangalore Winter Million, a terms race for three year olds, the feature event of long drawn card of 10 mediocre events that were gone through on Saturday. It was surprising that just four runners lined up for the race of this nature when valuable stake money could be picked. Those who entered the fray were all richer for merely participating in the event.

Top Striker was quoted at cramped odds despite the progeny of Sussex having to concede weight to his adversaries. The quality of his last win was such that he was expected to have things his way. The favourite showed out in the paddock parade. Jockey Imran Khan had Top Striker lead from the start and the favourite travelled powerfully, stormed clear of the rest to win by a widening margin of six lengths over Industrialist. Lamrei and Meezaaj occupied the next two slots by default and were rewarded with good prize money for their efforts.

The 1800 metres K Venkatesh Nayak Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 65, saw Padmanabhan trained Iceglow backed to the exclusion of the rest. The filly had recorded a runaway win last time out and was widely regarded as being superior to the opposition though there was some support for Festive Cheer who had run in the Oaks. In the event, jockey David Allan kept Iceglow in a handy second position behind pace setting Afore. Midway through the race, he realized the pace was not good enough for his horse and let Iceglow take charge. The progeny of Arazan thereafter broke into a useful lead and did not let anyone come near her. What A Wonder ran on from behind to edge out long-time leader Afore to get the runner up berth. In the form that she is in, Iceglow should repeat.

Darius Byramji trained Integrated had recorded two impressive wins and he was widely expected to record a hat-trick of wins in the 1400 metres Talkad Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 40 to 65. However, the favourite disappointed, failing to show the spark of his previous effort as he looked a beaten cause well before the race came on the boil. Despite being ridden vigorously, the response from Integrated was not forthcoming as he plodded home to finish a disappointing third. Seven of Hearts who skipped clear inside the final furlong, won at long odds from Hillsboro who staved off Integrated to get the runner up berth. Irfan Ghatala trained Be Inspired was the on money favourite to win the lower division of the race and the favourite faced no difficulty as he shot into the lead in the final furlong and was not unduly extended when winning from King of the Court. Magnitude Star who did the front running, stayed on to finish third.

Prasanna Kumar trained Garuda was another huge favourite to disappoint. Garuda came in for unprecedented support in the 1200 metres Hurricane Stud Plate, a race for horses rated 60 and above, as the progeny of Burden of Proof had beaten a quality field last time out. Much to the chagrin of punters who put money on the favourite, Garuda raced flat, never showing up any stage of the race to eventually finish poorly. Bottom weighted New Crown who bolted to the front from the start faced no threat from any of the runners as the got abroad filly checked in well clear of Wings of Fortune and All In. Despite running after a long lay off and running over a sharp trip, Zucchero was a suggestive close fourth.

Neil Darashah trained J Gatsby who had run a forward race last time out, won the1200 metres Dharmasthala Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45 at fancy odds. The odds on Powerscourt drifted out alarmingly which itself indicated that the ante post favourite would not be in the serious reckoning. I`ve Got Clout became the favourite by default as he too did not have any worthwhile form. Honour was the one who came in for considerable support. However, Honour failed to get a forward position from the inside draw and her jockey Noornabi did not give a smooth ride to the horse, involved in continuously boring with Garv which affected her chances. Though Honour covered lot of ground in the straight, J Gatsby who had taken charge inside the final 200 metres, was in no mood to relent and marched on gallantly to record a comfortable win. New Prince impressed when finishing a suggestive third. Prasanna Kumar`s Passimpossible proved too good for the opposition in the lower division of the race, sparing more than five lengths at the finish to Native Ruler. The latter held off Black Lightning for the runner up berth.

Trainer Gregory Sandhu brought off two well backed wins through first timer Lochness and Wrekin. There was significant support for Lochness to win the 1100 metres Mercara Plate, a race for maiden three year olds. The filly was backed down from a higher quote even as odds on favourite Racing Fire shot up significantly. Though Lochness was not brisk at the start and was at the wrong end of the field till turning for home, the filly proved too good for the field as she responded well to the urgings of jockey Janardhan Paswan to nail the front running Good Fortune in the final moments of the race. Romantic Helen was third while Racing Fire was a dismal fourth.

Sandhu loves to live by the fire going by the choice of the jockeys and these horses attract big betting with great confidence. A good gamble was brought off on Wrekin in the 1400 metres Octogonal Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Janardhan just about managed to keep Wrekin ahead of Brown Panther to land the spoils in a tight finish. Brown Panther could have pulled it off but for encountering turbulence at a crucial stage of the race. Cannes and I`ll Have One More were in close order.

Puttanna trained Exemplar won the 1400 metres Doddaballapur Plate, a race for horses in the lowest class, at big odds. Exemplar did the entire running and easily held off the late charge of Reverberating. Favourite Dancing Princess was in earnest chase of the front runner but did not find anything extra and even lost the runner up berth to Reverberating who covered plenty of ground to come within striking reach of the front runner. Reverberating can be exploited profitably next time out if there is will to do so.
