Agostini displays his might

By: Goldie Boy   February 13 , 2016

Trainer Suleiman Attaollahi`s top-weighted (62.5kg) runner, Agostini, displayed his superior class on his way to winning the 2,800m Queen Elizabeth II Cup, the feature event in Saturday`s race card. Ridden by Trevor Patel, the six-year-old had an easy measure of Triumphus, who had placed fourth in the last edition of the showpiece event, and Agostini`s South Indian compatriot, Dare To Devil, the winner of the Indian Champion Cup.

Ridden well off the pace; until the early half of the gruelling trip, Agostini improved but marginally as Obelina Princess and Adzukis cut scorching pace till approaching the final turn. About 800m from home, Trevor lost the position and fell back to the rear while giving a breather to the 6/1 shot.

Agostini was, however, quick to recover and improved to be sixth along the rails, passing the 600m marker but at the top of the home-turn, Dare To Dream had joined the long time leaders.

Inside the final furlong, as early leaders were tiring and Dare To Dream was quickly gaining the ground, along with Triumphus, Trevor was forced to bisect the two runners to make his final move. Agistini was in complete charge of the opposition about 100m from home and raced towards the winning post.

Triumphus (Dashrath Singh-up) finished a good second, narrowing down Agostini`s final verdict to a shade under a length. The even-money favourite, Dare To Dream, was third but jockey Imran Chisty appeared to have utilised the horse`s short burst a wee too early. The horse was hard-pressed to edge out Romantic Magic, the four-year-old who went to the start as a 9/2 chance.

Favorites, in fact, fared poorly in the nine-event card as the competition was very tough. Therefore, it hardly came as a surprise when trainer Vijay Singh`s baby, Abbeville, failed to record his third straight victory. The 15/20 hot property, ridden by Christopher Alford, had everything going well in the 1,600m Calcutta Million, a Grade II race. However, the stable`s 17/4 fancied runner, Ophion (Pradeep Chauhan), had other ideas. The Abbeside colt, tracking another of stable`s speedy runner, Apercus, was shown the daylight in the home-straight, and he continued to kick on to score from the favourite who was ridden off the pace.

Bad luck haunted Christopher right from the start as the champion jockey found himself at the receiving-end in crunch situations. Jockey A. Sandesh tuned out to be beneficiary on two occasions.

In the 2,000m French Cup, Sandesh`s forceful riding of trainer Daniel David`s 8/1 chance, Earnest Ruler, proved decisive against Christopher`s charge Adrestia, an even-money favourite from Vijay`s yard.

The story repeated half-an-hour later when Daniel`s another fancied runner, Duke Of Earl, with Sandesh in the saddle, got the measure of the Christopher-ridden joint favourite, Another Glory, the Harvinder Bath-trained filly who led from the start in her effort to claim the 1,400m Portugal Cup.

Chrisropher, however, managed to salvage some credibility, in the concluding event, the 1,200m Ireland Cup. Partnering Bath`s another joint-favourite, Winning Fortune – with Clairvoyance -- the jockey got a narrow measure of the Sandesh-ridden horse (Clairvoyance), also trained by Daniel.

Sandesh also failed to drive home the advantage while riding Daniel`s The Talisman, in the 1,200m Philippines Cup. The jockey got himself crowded for room and he never got out of it as he placed a close fifth . The race was won by trainer Vikash Jaiswal`s quietly fancied runner, Bengal Tiger. In his last outing, the horse was heavily fancied but had unseated his jockey.

The 1,100m Malaysia Cup, another baby race, was an easy pick for trainer Bharath Singh`s Aquitania, ridden by Trevor. The Admiralofthefleet-Rhapsody Blue filly, a 13/10 favourite, made a short-work of the opposition to win the trophy from the start. Aquitania easily beat trainer Arti Doctor`s fancied runner, Empowered (P. Kamlesh).

Arti`s Aatish (B. Nikhil) also attracted huge wagering in his debut run but the 8/10 favourite, failed to deliver the goods in the 1,100m M.B. Medora Cup, also a baby race. Vijay`s Dysnomia (P. Chauhan) won the race in a close contest from James McKewon-trained Running Hand (Dashrath Singh). Aatish was, however, a good third and warrants following.

The afternoon started with the victory of trainer Manvendra Singh`s fancied runner, Azzraq (apprentice Hindu Singh), in the 1,200m Republic of Mauritius Cup. The apprentice rode a well-judged race on his way to an easy victory.
