Trevor times his challenge to a nicety

By: Frankel   April 10 , 2016

Trevor Patel on favourite Rule Downunder timed his challenge to a nicety to just about measure Zander to land the spoils in the 1200 metres Madras Race Club Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of Sunday`s Mumbai races. Three horses were involved in the tight finish, with Ageless relegated to third position. The disappointment of the race was the below par performance by Brahmachari.

Four of the five runners in the fray were all within strike reach of each other by virtue of their previous efforts. Zander had been finding the winning post elusive, losing out close home. Zander hadn`t won for 364 days despite his consistency. Rule Downunder had a win to his credit during the season and subsequently placed in all his four efforts. Ageless had won her last outing. The better performed of the lot was Brahmachari who had finished a length behind Dancing Prances in a graded race.

Sandesh who was astride Zander this time, had the progeny of Phoenix Tower lead from the start followed by Ageless, Brahmachari, Papakura and Rule Downunder. Sandesh didn`t let Zander to bolt in the front and let the five-year-old quicken only inside the final two furlongs. With Ageless not proving to be a big threat and Brahmachari fading out without putting a fight, Zander bounced clear in the final furlong. However, Rule Downunder who came home with the patented late burst of speed, had enough ground to cover the leeway and just about put his neck in front at the all-important end. Ageless was another neck behind the runner up.

Malesh Narredu trained London scored a spectacular win in the 1200 metres Satinello Trophy (Div I), a race for maiden three year olds. Cyclone who had the benefit of a race run was the firm favourite while the odds on London expanded dramatically to end up at 5 to 1. In the race itself, London failed to manoeuvre a forward position and fell back to the rear. Inside the final two furlongs, Cyclone who was cruising up, took over the running and looked the likely winner as London was lost in the crowd at this stage. However, when Zervan pulled out London to the wide outside and let the progeny of Phoenix Tower get into full flight, the response was tremendous. London covered the leeway in a matter of few fractions and by the final furlong, had the race in his grasp. London overhauled Cyclone with ease to record an impressive win. Brothersofthewind nosed out Zanzibaar to get the third place. The lower division of the race was claimed by Imtiaz Sait trained Magical Memory. Pesi Shroff trained Nutcracker who is by Holy Roman Emperor came in for one sided betting. However, Nutcracker gave no hope at any stage of the race and was beaten long way from home. The progeny of first season stallion Whatsthescript out of hugely successful race mare Flying Home, Magical Memory covered ground rapidly in the straight and stretched away from Thunder Down Under in the final furlong to make an emphatic debut. Nutcracker was long way behind in third position.

The reversal of form of Nirad Karanjawalla trained Frankest in the lower division of the Quest For Cash Plate (Div II), a race for horses rated 20 to 46, needs serious probing. Whatever explanations that the trainer may offer, the fact that remains that the running pattern of the horse was not in the best interest of the sport and such practices bring disrepute to the sport. The horse ran as a fancied runner the previous time and finished 16.8 lengths behind the winner when ridden by champion jockey Sandesh. This time out the four-year-old was backed down from a higher quote and he appeared to have sprouted wings as it were and left the field stranded to win by a widening margin of six lengths over In My Life and Aeolus Maximus. One is not sure what explanation the trainer has on offer as the horse had already been a subject matter of enquiry for his previous run. One has to see how good the Stipes are in deciphering this kind of violent fluctuation of form; whether they suspend disbelief and accept that everything is possible in racing and that they can do nothing about it. Mansoor Shah trained Alien who was backed to the exclusion of the rest in the upper division of the race, had no problem in keeping late finishing Shining Melody and Speed of Sound at bay to justify the expectations.

Faisal Abbas trained Pink Panther was given a below par ride last time out and on the evidence of that effort, looked outstanding to win the 1400 metres Skoda Superb Cup, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. However, there seemed to be a hidden horse in the fray in Lord Arazan from Malesh Narredu`s stables who was backed down spiritedly from a higher quote to end up as a well backed second favourite. Zervan had Pink Panther take control from the start and the favourite faced no hiccup enroute to success. Debutant Arlene came from virtually the rear position at the final bend to be an impressive second. Sensex edged past Charging Tigress to get the third place. Lord Arazan disappeared without a trace after being in touch with the front runner till turning for home.

Adhiraj Jodha trained Speedo who had twice found one better, was third time lucky as the four-year-old, despite veering out badly in the final furlong, still proved good enough for the strongly backed Pretty In Patpong in the 1000 metres Regal Equity Plate (Div I), a race for horses in the lowest class. Pretty In Patpong suffered because of a weak jockey. Acer Bilk was third. Shiraz Sunderji trained Baryshnikov broke the maiden`s tag in his ninth run when slamming the opposition in the lower division of the race by six lengths over Wonder Story. Speed Magic was third. Baryshnikov won like a better class horse but winners in this class have time and again prove unreliable.
