Cameron finds her bearings in Wadiyar Cup

  May 15 , 2016

Suleiman Attaollahi trained Cameron asserted her supremacy by staving off the challenge of seasoned performer Booker Jones to win the Gr 3 Jayachamaraja Wadiyar Cup, a terms race for four year olds and over, the feature event of Sunday`s races. The daughter of Admiralofthefleet was taking on older horses in a race of this nature for the first time and she proved that she has the capability to make her presence felt even in exalted company.

This year, the quality of horses for terms races will be of much inferior quality than before. Of the seven horses in the fray, six of them have been well past their prime. The best performed of the lot was Machiavellianism who is a multi-classic winner. However, the seven-year-old is not in the form that had made him a champion. Booker Jones has been consistent but invariably found one better. Punters opted to go for the experienced horses resulting in Machiavellianism becoming the favourite ahead of Booker Jones while the odds on Cameroon eased to 4 to 1. In the event, Machiavellianism proved that he is well past his best and gave a dismal account of himself. Only Booker Jones put a semblance of a fight.

Mickey Mouse moved up with a flourish from the outside position to take over the running within the first furlong as the field set out for the seven-furlong trip. Cameroon was handily placed along with Booker Jones while Machiavellianism fell back after a prominent start. Satellite and Ethophian brought the rear of the field. Suraj Narredu pushed Cameroon to take over the running on turning for home and the lesser fancied runner smoothly progressed to establish a sizeable lead. Though Booker Jones worked hard to overhaul the front runner, he fell short by a shade less than a length. Satellite ran on from behind to take the third place ahead of Machiavellianism.

Gregory Sandhu trained Lochness booked a ticket for the Gr 1 Fillies Championship Stakes with an astounding performance in the lower division of the 1400 metres Dr T Thimmaiah Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 45 to 65. Lochness had won two races in a row in her debut season in winter and the quality of those wins were such that she was widely expected to win her third race in a row. There was spurt of money on top weighted Gabino to spice things up. Zervan on Lochness steadily moved up from about the fifth or sixth position and was in striking position at the top of the straight. The progeny of Arabian Gulf quickened brilliantly in the run in for home and collared the front running Jersey Wonder with minimum of fuss. Lochness stretched away to have the race sewn up long way from home. Gabino ran on from behind to take the second spot ahead of Honour. Darius Byramji trained Flamboyance had earned a rating of 55 without winning a single race but by virtue of her placed effort in the Derby. She was strongly supported to break the maidens ranks in the upper division of the race. Flamboyance engaged Super Success in a stiff battle for supremacy and held the upper hand all through the final furlong to win with a measure of comfort. Bonfire who was inconvenienced at the start, came up with a powerful challenge but found the eventual winner too hard to crack and settled for the runner up berth.

Prithviraj trained Knighthood had recorded a smashing win as a three-year-old but had since then run into series of physical ailments. A tie back operation had been performed twice and this was the reason he had just one run during the winter season and hadn`t won a race for 344 days. Knighthood`s preparation after coming out of a setback seemed to be satisfactory and since he was taking on modest lot of horses compared to the horses he had run with; he was backed spiritedly to win the race. Ante post favourite Born Phoenix did not figure in the market expectations and the odds on the horse shot up dramatically. The performance too matched the dramatic drift in odds. Knighthood travelled well within himself along the rails in the lead position and spurted for home by establishing a sizeable lead by the final furlong. Knighthood did not come under any pressure and won capably from Secret Prayer who had come in for some spirited betting but found himself out paced at the start and left to cover too much leeway in the straight. Aguante ran on to finish third.

Neil Darashah trained Proserpine was backed to the exclusion of the rest in the 1100 metres Sir Bruce Plate, a race for maiden three olds. The progeny of Mull of Kintyre showed out in the paddock parade. Though she ran green in the early part of the race, she powered her way to a handsome win by a margin of over five lengths. Harley Quin necked out Mistress of Spice to claim the runner up berth. Proserpine appears a good type of youngster.

Another Darashah ward Times Time was a comfortable winner of the 1400 metres Allaire Plate, a race for maiden three year olds. Times Time made a good rally along the rails in the straight to draw clear of front running favourite Snow Crystal and recorded a comfortable win. Opening Act made a good rally in the final stages of the race to edge out the favourite for the runner up berth.

In a tight finish, Amit Cady trained Better Than Ever squeezed home for a narrow win over Celestial Storm in the 1200 metres Aureole Time Plate, a race for horses rated 15 to 35. Real Generous led the charge but closer home, was had pressed by a host of horses with Better Than Ever proving to be better in the end. Real Generous was third while Cannes who finished home with a strong effort, grabbed the third place ahead of the heavily supported Active Grey who had been backed down spiritedly from a higher quote. Active Grey found the six furlong trip too sharp for comfort and though he was full of running, he ran out of ground.

Narayan Gowda trained Soviet Union brought off an upset in the 1200 metres M N Prakash Memorial Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 30 to 45. Soviet Union produced a winning effort on the wide outside with a brilliant rally which took him past Ambleside and Mariko who were disputing the issue. The lower division of the race also went the way of another Gowda trainee Saffron Intense who obliged at nourishing odds. After being a detached last till turning for home, Saffron Intense produced the wining effort in the final furlong and won pulling away by a margin of five lengths over favourite Astral Spirit who was once again not up to delivering the goods. Reformer nosed out Oye Como Va to get the third place.
