Whomakestherules swamps opposition in Million

  May 22 , 2016

The Gr 2 Karnataka Juvenile Million, a terms race for three year olds, the feature event of Sunday`s races which has traditionally served as a pointer for the summer classics, turned out to be a hopelessly one-sided affair, with Malesh Narredu trained Whomakestherules drubbing the opposition by a widening margin of eight lengths to herald his arrival as a frontline contender for the classics. The progeny of Multidimensional who had won back to back races at Mumbai made a quantum improvement in his performance capability which had his rivals stranded way behind.

Sunday`s races did not run kindly for punters who tend to back only favourites. It is not that horses won out of turn in most events. These days, the bookmaker odds do not give clarity as to the shape of things to come. Notwithstanding the competitive nature of a race, the odds are cramped on one horse with the rest available at lucrative odds, throwing a confusing picture to the punters. In the event, the majority go with the favourite, ending up disastrous consequences. One fails to understand the logic of these odds. Ice Glacier was no doubt well served by the terms of the race as she was placed at the bottom of the scales but the fact of the matter was that there were many in the fray with impressive wins to back their claims. Whomakestherules had won twice and the second time in a smart timing over a sprint. Bold March was a winner of a graded race where he had held off four others in a tight finish. As such, the one sided support on Ice Glacier based only on expectations were not in keeping with the competitive nature of the race.

The odds on Ice Glacier kept on shortening in the betting ring, with Whomakestherules who should have at least been a close second favourite, quoted at 5 to 1. The Bangalore horses have been handicapped this season in particular, with the summer being the most oppressive in many decades. The horses suffered under the asbestos sheets, with there being no provision for even fans. Several horses reported sick, with the number of horses having episodes of fever reportedly being in the region of 100. Because of the heat, the horses have also not been subjected to the kind of workouts that are the normal pattern for horses running in a race of this nature. As such, the local horses being eclipsed was not exactly a surprise.

Ice Glacier who was troublesome before being stalled, was taken on a start to finish mission by jockey Sandesh with Whomakestherules in a handy second position along rails along with Top Striker and the rest. Inside the final 300 metres, Ice Glacier looked to be in trouble as she failed to quicken even as Whomakestherules and Top Striker loomed large. Whomakestherules showed splendid acceleration and skipped away and had the race sewn up long way from home to eventually win by a huge margin. Bold March rallied from way off the pace to take the second position ahead of Maduro who held off Top Striker for the third place. Ice Glacier finished poorly.

The quality of victory of Whomakestherules makes him as a frontline contender for the Gr 1 Colts Championship Stakes. Serjeant At Arms who is the highest rated three year old at this centre, did not figure in this race, as he had an episode of fever in the recent past.

Aravind Ganapathy trained Pearl Secret who had been a fairly consistent performer at Mumbai, pulled off a spirited win over Super Queen in the 1400 metres Dhamaprakasha L S Venkaji Rao Memorial Cup, a raced for horses rated 45 to 65. Neil Darashah trained Spirit And Truth was the overwhelming favourite but the four year old gelding who was troublesome, also did not run at an even keel and was a beaten cause well before the race came on the boil. Pearl Secret shot ahead in the final furlong and was strongly pressed by Super Queen but the former pulled out that bit extra to win with a measure of comfort in the end. Spirit And Truth was a tame third.

The 1400 metres Poonawalla Stud Plate, a race for horses rated 30 to 50, saw N H Sequeira trained Aika Aika Aika attract huge volumes of betting even as the odds on Arabelle and Emidio drifted out. Emidio ran too freely in front for him to make an impact on the result as he slackened in the final furlong. Aika Aika Aika came home with a spirited run from behind and had no problem in getting the better of Racing Fire to land the big touch. Emidio was third. Emidio has the capability to win next time out provided there is intent and flow of money in the ring.

On money favourite African Emperor played up at the gates and bolted and was withdrawn from the fray in the 1200 metres Ministerial Trophy (Div I), a race for maiden three year olds. Papadokia showed speed to lead the field well into the straight before being edged out by Running Hand. However, the latter too was beaten in the shadow of the post by lesser fancied Erstklassig. Fabulous and Mahathi covered acres of ground in the run in for home to occupy the next two slots on the frame. Malesh Narredu trained River Dance was backed to the exclusion of the rest in the lower division of the race, with the odds on Sang Royal who had two run benefits in winter, at nourishing odds. River Dance led in earnest well into the final furlong but could not sustain it as Sang Royal put immense pressure on the favourite and got stronger close home. Bangalore Princess who raced up with the field, stayed on to finish third.

Burnished God who had run three times at Kolkata without being able to break the maidens ranks, ended up as the firm favourite in the 1200 metres Romantic Dancer Plate, a race for horses rated 15 to 35, perhaps more by default. The odds on Trojan who was the second favourite, expanded after the five-year-old bolted enroute to the starting gate. Arjun Manglorkar trained Kapalua engaged Trojan in a grim battle for supremacy before storming clear in the final furlong to land the spoils at big odds. Burnished Gold could do no better than take the third slot.

Puttanna trained Nagarjuna who was running after 555 days, was the recipient of sustained betting in the 1400 metres Amazing Grace Plate, a race for horses in the lowest class. The betting was reminiscent of the kind of money that Puttanna`s horses used to attract those days and they would invariably oblige. However, apprentice Nazeerul Alam was not up to delivering the goods as he failed to be in striking position. The finishing burst of the favourite went in vain. Narayana Gowda trained Red Admiral nosed out Scorching in a thriller. Gowda`s other ward Assertive Prince opened as the favourite but the odds expanded so much that it was clear that the horse would not be seen in serious business.

whomakestherules`s earlier win over Serenita was impressive because he had to move around three collapsing animals to nail front running Serenita. Serenita increases the value of that victory by winning in her very next outing, showing her class...
