Trainer Bobby saddles a hat-trick of winners

By: Stay Thirsty   July 20 , 2016

Trainer Bobby had a rewarding day, saddling three winners in successive races to enjoy a rich haul in the small card of six events that were gone through on Wednesday at Mysore. Prabhakaran guided Extra Spark to a facile win in the 1600 metres Queen of the Hills Plate, a race for horses rated 60 and above, the highest-rated event of the day. Favourite The Wolf who had moved up swiftly into this class, could not graduate and flopped badly.

Michael Eshwer trained The Wolf who was bidding for a hat-trick was the on money favourite to win the mile long race. The Wolf was taking on more experienced horses and the price quoted on him was certainly not commensurate with the capability to perform in the higher class. In the event, The Wolf who also failed to get a clear run as his jockey Suraj Narredu ran into a road block at a crucial stage of the race also prevented the favourite from finishing closer than he did.. After Tulip expended his energy running freely in front, Campeon took charge in the straight. Extra Spark who had warmed up to the task, came up with a strong bid down the final furlong, stormed clear. In the meanwhile, The Wolf was struck between Campeon and The Tulip and when Extra Spark overhauled the field on the wide outside, he was boxed in. Extra Spark went on to win comfortably from late finishing Reanna and Campeon who stayed on to take the third place. The Wolf was a poor fourth.

Suraj was also astride on another losing favourite in Clouds who went down narrowly in the closing moments of the race in the 1400 metres Ganjam Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Clouds took charge of the proceedings in earnest inside the final two furlongs and held the lead till the final stages of the race. Stablemate Sardina who moved up with a flourish on the wide outside managed to neck out the front runner. Silver Wood who failed to show speed from the start, was a tame third.

There was a perceptible flow of money on Appachu trained Malkia in 1600 metres Karighatta Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. This was a clear indication that Malkia who was sporting blinkers, would be racing in earnest. Country`s Fortune showed the way as Malkia was kept in a handy second position by jockey Kiran Rai. Invincible Wish who was another fancied runner, expected to record an encore, was in about the fourth position till turning for home. Malkia displaced Country Fortune in front midway through the homestretch and then bounced clear. Though Invincible Wish came home with a strong challenge, the front-runner had enough reserves to go past the post ahead, sparing half a length at the finish. Al Dorado was faraway third.

The 1200 metres Red Chieftan Plate, a race for horses in the lowest class, turned out to be eventful where Bipin Salvi trained Esterhazy was disqualified for dangerous drift on to his opponents, principally to Smart Mistral who however managed to sail through the skirmish to record a narrow win. There was a Stewards enquiry into the race. The whip happy Arshad Alam failed to control the outward drfit of Esterhazy despite using the whip liberally on the left and went on dangerously to Smart Mistral who was full of running. Luckily, jockey Sameer did not panic and managed to drive home the fancied runner to victory. As a result of Esterhazy being disqualified, Badshah was moved to the second position while Always On Top was third. Smart Mistral was the first of the three winners that Bobby saddled in consecutive races.

Bobby trained Winged King produced a powerful burst of speed from way off the pace to down the front-running Savannah Sound in sight of the winning post to record a narrow win in the 1400 metres Bol Publications Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Queen did all the front running before being displaced from that position in the straight by Savannah Sound. When Winged King came home with a strong effort, Savannah Sound faltered and had to settle for the runner-up berth. Queen managed to neck out Blue Zone to take the third place. Favourite Society Music did not find a place on the frame. Bobby saddled his third winner through Winged King in the fifth race.

The 1400 metres Scone Stone Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45, was a race where jockeys were not allowed to carry the whip. Bobby trained Cactucs Cash came in for strong support to build on his last start second but then the progeny of Sedgefield failed miserably. B K Narendra trained last start winner Zizi who made a good rally along the rails in the hands of jockey A R Pradeep held off the threat of Concentration to land the spoils at big odds. Though Arshad Alam tried hard, the lack of a whip had a bearing on his riding. Beautiful Effect was a close third.
