Sakchi halts Gelignite’s winning sequence

By: Stay Thirsty   July 25 , 2016

Ranjeet Shinde trained Sakchi recorded an encore, in the process halting the winning run of Gelignite in the 1400 metres Kokkare Bellur Plate, a race for horses rated 60 and above, the feature event of Monday`s Mysore races. Gelignite had recorded four wins in a row on the Mysore track but the combination of poor riding and the fact that he was taking on better quality opposition ensured that the Monnappa trainee would taste defeat.

Gelignite was well supported to maintain his winning streak. Jockey Arshad Alam who is enjoying a good Mysore season, took Gelignite on a start to finish mission and his runaway tactics by increasing the speed and opening up a big lead midway through the race was to cost the favourite a possible winning chance. Gelignite led deep into the straight but ran out of reserves close home and was overhauled by Srinath ridden Sakchi in the final moments of the race. Class Above who was a smashing winner of his last outing, finished with a powerful burst in the hands of apprentice Ajay Kumar but just about failed to get the better of the eventual winner. Gelignite stayed on to take the third place. Dyna who was one of the fancied runners, lost pace soon after jump out and finished in the ruck.

Jockey Rajesh Kumar, the rider of Arrete, which finished fourth failed to weigh in. The jockey stated that he forgot to do so which is an irresponsible statement. The jockeys are expected to weigh in especially since the horse will be disqualified for this reason alone. Rajesh Kumar is not a novice and this act of dereliction should be viewed seriously so that these type of instances don`t recur. There is always a possibility of a horse winning a race against the wishes of the connections and this could result in a jockey not to weigh in which has happened in the past in Mysore itself. The Clerk of the Scales should ensure that all weigh in instead of merely waiting for an opportunity to report if some show carelessness or deliberately fail to weigh in. The potential for misuse is very high if jockeys don`t get deterrent punishment.

There was inspired betting on Ice Weapon in the 1400 metres Nadir Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45 but the fancied runner was never in the hunt and eventually finished a poor fourth. Spinning Chakram from the yards of trainer Pratap Kamath, obliged her supporters with a comprehensive win over Speed Queen and Gascony. Lesser fancied Ascendency fought out with favourite Ireland before asserting his supremacy in the lower division of the race. Generous Gesture who lost ground at the start improved places swiftly and finished powerfully to end up a close third, a neck behind the runner-up.

Monnappa trained Halloween`s Way proved strong in the Sindhu Plate (Div I), a race for maiden three-year-olds. After Scorpene showed the way well into the straight, Halloween`s way swept past the front runner for a facile win. Brown Beauty did well to finish second ahead of Scorpene. Bipin Salvi trained One Step Ahead certainly did not have strong credentials to be quoted at a very short price in the lower division of the race. One Step Ahead displaced front running Eye of the Needle at the top of the straight but was soon collared by Ayra`s Delight who then sped away for a win by a widening margin of six lengths. Honey Wen Money necked out Beauty Icon for the third place.

Santosh Rao trained Arrive had no problem in winning the 1200 metres Amba Vilas Palace Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Jockey Manohar took Arrive to the front from the start and the long shot stayed put there to win by a comfortable margin of four lengths. Ice Splendour came from long way back to get the second spot ahead of a struggling Kir Royale. Jockey Zervan drove out Pratap Kamath trained Catchy Charger to get the better of front-running Catharsis in the closing strides of the race to land the spoils in the lower division of the race. Scaramouche saved place money.

Bobby trained Moroccan produced a powerful burst inside the final furlong to go past the front running Dark William and then held off a late surge by favourite Port Blair in the 1200 metres Bannur Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Savannah Sound showed intent but failed to pick up momentum and even failed to get the better of Dark William and ended up a tame fourth.

Surender trained Strive And Serve made a successful start to finish mission in the 1600 metres Serengeti Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Strive Serve looked vulnerable when Green Emerald came to challenge him but the former dug into reserves and skipped away to win comfortably from late finishing Here`s Abbey. Green Emerald was neck behind the runner-up.
