Policy Maker exploits the pull in weights

By: Tippu Sultan   October 15 , 2016

Woman O War was done in by the back-breaking weight that she had to carry while Policy Maker benefitted by the five-kg drop in weight vis-à-vis apprentice Rohit Kumar guiding his fortunes as the six-year-old gelding made an aggressive start to finish mission and easily stayed way ahead of the rest to win the 1800 metres A P Race Horse Owners Association Trophy, a Category I race, the feature event of a small card of six events that were gone through on Sunday at Hyderabad.

Woman O War is a horse of immense substance. With the horse assigned a back-breaking weight of 68 kgs, the trainer had sought the services of apprentice Rafique. Woman O War is a difficult horse to handle as she is sluggish at the start, should be ridden in restraint without giving too much of leeway to the others and her final challenge has to be timed to a nicety. However, Rafique was all at sea as Woman O War who was off to a slow start, graced the rear end of the field, and made no improvement at any stage of the race and had no chance of even coming into fighting line inside the final furlong.

Woman O War was the firm favourite despite all the disadvantages suffered by the one-eyed filly. Seasoned performer Policy Maker was taken to the front from the start and the long shot enjoyed an uncontested lead and checked in well clear of Found Money. Woman O War finished third long way behind.

Satyanarayana trained City of Wonder had twice found one better but this time out looked too good for the field in the 1100 metres Raja R J K Ranga Rao Zamindar Of Chikkavaram Memorial Cup, a Category II race. Apprentice Sai Kiran brought the favourite through the middle with a well-timed run down the final furlong and the progeny of Verenar pounced on the front-runners to go storming clear to win in emphatic fashion. Princess Hina chased the winner without hope. Shivalik Bird failed to pick up steam and finished a poor third.

Despite being ultra-consistent having hit the board consistently, Hilton Sequeira trained Mahathi is finding the winning post elusive. Yet again, the three-year-old gelding was found wanting at the finish despite shaping like a winner in the final furlong of the 1600 metres Paradis Plate, a Category III race. Mahathi had a useful lead going into the final furlong but in sight of the winning post, he began to slacken. Veronese who was in hot pursuit managed to overhaul the front-runner in the closing moments of the race to win at nourishing odds. Monte Rosa was third.

After an indifferent performance, Vittal Deshmukh trained Mr Baahubali trounced the opposition in the 1400 metres Tick Tock Plate, a Category II race. Mr Baahubali went beyond the reach of the rest to win as he pleased. On money favourite Doroteo struggled for speed and was a timid second. Magical Spell was third.

Satyanarayana trained True Pearl won the 1200 metres Elite Zone Plate, a Category III race, in convincing fashion. After being held up in about the fourth position, True Pearl steadily gained ascendancy in the straight and stormed clear of front-running Bouncer in the final furlong to win capably. Bouncer stayed on to finish second ahead of Rocky Hill.

Prasad Raju trained Dream Girl came in for one-sided betting in the 1100 metres Camino Cup, a Category III race. This was in keeping with the obvious superiority of the three-year-old filly. Jockey Nilesh Rawal took Dream Girl on a start to finish mission and the progeny of Roi Maudit kept on increasing the lead in the straight to eventually win by a widening margin of six lengths over Dragonstone and Queen To Rule.
