The Lieutenant springs a surprise in Gayatri Devi Trophy

By: Stay Thirsty   October 22 , 2016

Neil Darashah trained The Lieutenant surprised in the 2000 metres Gayatri Devi Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 and above, the feature event of Saturday`s Mysore races. Stablemate Zodiac was the firm favourite but the Lieutenant proved to be far superior to the opposition, storming clear in the final furlong and won with a measure of comfort from long-time leader Amazing Charm. Trainer Padmanabhan saddled a treble through Tinderella, Hall of Famer and Feliciana.

Zodiac who had won the same distance was made the on-money favourite but found to be wanting. Amazing Charm led from the start with Torch Bearer, The Lieutenant, Zodiac and Storming Home who was slowly off from the gates. Amazing Charm held on to the lead resolutely before being overwhelmed in the closing stages by the eventual winner. Torch Bearer dropped out of contention at the top of the straight to finish poorly. Zodiac was third.

Padmanabhan trained Hall of Famer recorded an impressive win in the 1600 metres Forester`s Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. The progeny of Win Legend tracked Premier Ace till the top of the straight before David Allan pushed the favourite to take charge. Hall of Famer quickened well and despite veering out, checked in well clear of Jersey Wonder in a smart time of one minute 34.5 seconds. Ruthba was faraway third.

David Allan rode Feliciana to a facile win over Mysore based Sea Lagoon in the 1200 metres Gool & Soli Poonawalla Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 and above. Sea Lagoon had won all her five outings. After being held in about the fifth position, Feliciana steadily improved places and produced a strong effort in the straight to sail past the front-running Russian Link in the final furlong to record a comfortable win over late rallying Sea Lagoon. Russian Link stayed on to finish third.

Padmanabhan`s other ward Tinderella showed vast improvement when winning the 1400 metres R M Puttanna Memorial Trophy, a race for horses in the lowest category. Tinderella was angled out inside the final furlong by apprentice Prashant Dhebe and the three-year-old filly quickened very well to go sailing clear of Granada and Noble Princess. The timings have been relatively faster on the dry track of Mysore and Tinderella clocked a good time of one minute 25.69 seconds for a race of this category.

Nataraj trained Ontime has struck purple patch after being relocated from Bangalore. Rated highly in the initial part of his career, Ontime had failed repeatedly. However, this season he has come into his own and the five-year-old recorded the third win of this season. Backed strongly to repeat, Ontime had no problem in going clear of the rest inside the final 300 metres and win the 1400 metres Setia Teknologi Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 65, in the hands of jockey Srinath. Color Me finished on late to take the second position ahead of Catharsis.

Arjun Mangalorkar trained Towering Heights who had always run out of ground, finally found the ideal company to prevail in a tight finish over Dagobert in the 1400 metres D H Dasappa Memorial Trophy, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Dagobert had shaped to win the race as he led the initiative till the final moments of the race but a strong finishing effort by jockey John enabled Towering Heights to clinch the issue in the final stride of the race. Lightning Attack ran on to edge past Duke of Norfolk to save place money.

Azhar Ali trained Colossal Moments was driven out to beat Noble Flaire and Precious Glitter to win the 1200 metres Bottolonda Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Precious Glitter came in for big support but was unable to deliver the goods. The lower division however presented a contrasting picture. Neymar was backed with the confidence that only in the know of things could do. Neymar readily justified such an expectation swamping the rest by a margin of over six lengths. Thundersquall was second ahead of Danburite.

Bobby trained Chackaloochoo recorded an encore by winning the 1600 metres Vasco Group Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Chackaloochoo went on a start to finish mission at a brisk pace and despite drifting almost to the edge of the grass track, was still good enough to win easily from favourite Pakachu. Robinhood Pandey was a tame third.
