Fashion High makes it in Godolphin Million

By: Tippu Sultan   February 13 , 2017

Donald Netto trained Fashion High was guided to a resolute win in the Gr 3 Godolphin Barb Million, a terms race for three-year-olds, the feature event of Monday`s Hyderabad races. The progeny of first season stallion Western Aristocrat, Fashion High led all the way and held off the strong challenge of Palace On Wheels quite competently.

That`s My Class who had won twice and carrying a penalty for the same, was nevertheless expected to defy the same and was made the favourite. Jockey Louis Beuzelin took Fashion High on a start to finish mission followed by Palace On Wheels, That`s My Class and Hope Is Eternal. Fashion High enjoyed a good lead all through the race and looked to be sailing without any threat. Palace On Wheels inched close menacingly in the final furlong but the front-runner was able to produce that bit extra to win by a shade less than a length. Palace On Wheels held off the late rally of That`s My Class to get the runner-up berth while Hope Is Eternal was completely outclassed.

Anant Vatsalya trained Amorous White had the distinction of scoring his third win in his first season when he led from the start and easily stayed clear of Vancouver to win the 1200 metres Mother`s Boy Plate, a race for three-year-olds. Amorous White was conceding weight to all his rivals by virtue of two wins recorded in the season. The favourite is blessed with good cruising speed and Chouhan had no hesitation in taking the progeny of Stern Opinion to the front. Amorous White travelled comfortably in front and though Vancouver produced an all-out effort in the final furlong, the favourite had enough resources to record a comfortable win. Southern Crown ran on to finish third.

The most absorbing finish of the day was witnessed in the 2000 metres Charon Plate, a race for horses rated 46 to 70. Inside the final furlong, Leo D`Silva trained Carolina Moon had the initiative over Dahlois, Ashwa Ashoka and Euro Zone. Though Carolina Moon looked vulnerable, she managed to cross the post ahead of the three strong challengers, with ΒΌ length, head and head separating the first four finishers. Dahlois was second while Ashwa Ashoka was third. Euro Zone could have been a possible winner but jockey Pradeep Chouhan failed to get a clear run right from the final bend and though Euro Zone managed to finish with a strong run despite all the hiccups, he ran out of ground in the end and finished a close fourth. With better positioning and trouble-free passage, Euro Zone could have been the winner.

It was difficult to separate Secret Art and Mount of Light at the finish in the 1400 metres Pakhal Cup, a race for horses rated 26 to 50 as they went past the post locked together in a desperately close finish. The Judge took a long time before delivering the verdict. Secret Art who had a sizeable lead going into the final furlong had just about held on to win by a nose from fast-finishing Mount of Light. The official timing announced for both was the same which was one minute 27.20 seconds but the result was based on a minor fraction of a second. Gangadhar necked out Raja Hindustani for the third place.

Prasad Raju trained Divine Heights was backed down to the exclusion of the rest in the 1100 metres Nilgiris Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated up to 30. Divine Heights proved overwhelmingly superior by leaving the field stranded in the final furlong. Oh Pharaoh was second ahead of Princess. The lower division of the race produced an exciting finish with Aalishaan recording a thrilling win over Rohini. The latter had a good lead in the final furlong and shaped to win but Aalishaan produced a devastating run in the final stages of the race to get the nod by a whisker in the final stride of the race. Dawning Hope was a well beaten third.

Ravinder Singh trained Royal Dynamite produced the patented late burst to edge past long shot General Salute to win the 1200 metres Mossy Banks Plate (Div II), a race for horses rated 26 to 50. General Salute threatened the party for the supporters of the favourite as he was relentless in front but closer home, Royal Dynamite exploded to justify the strong support in the betting ring. Golden Image was third.

Netto trained Kalinda brought off a big upset in the 1400 metres Amarnath Gupta Memorial Cup (Div II), a race for horses rated 46 to 70. Favourite Azarenka took a long while in the straight to get the better of front-running Green Striker but before the five-year-old mare could assert her supremacy, Kalinda began to close the gap and in the end, stormed clear of the favourite to record a handsome win. Green Striker ran on to finish third.

Trainer Donald Netto who saddled three winners, started the day with a win on favourite Leading Legend who won the 1400 metres Prince Khartoum Plate, a race for horses rated 46 to 70, without coming under pressure. Jockey Louis Beuzelin brought Leading Legend into contention in the homestretch with a well-timed run and the favourite bounced clear inside the final 200 metres to win the race from Miracle King who just about staved off Top Contender to get the runner-up berth.
