Extra Spark re-asserts supremacy in feature

By: Stay Thirsty   February 15 , 2017

M Bobby trained Extra Spark reasserted his supremacy against more or less the same opposition in the 2000 metres Vidhatri Motors Cup, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of Wednesday`s Mysore races. Extra Spark went into a decisive lead in the final furlong and had no problem in finishing well clear of Momotaro to win at lucrative odds.

Michela had failed as a favourite last time out, losing her chances with a slow beginning from which she never recovered though she ran on well at the finish. The punters believed that it was a one-off affair and that Michela would bounce back and this was the reason why there was renewed faith in the got-abroad filly to recoup losses. Dragon who was once a rousing performer was also well patronised. Extra Spark who had won last time out when Michela, Momotaro and Kaguya Himei were in the fray, was at long odds.

Ancient Title, as is his wont, attempted runaway tactics, enjoying an uncontested lead of a distance in front. However, Ancient Title began to run out of reserves approaching the final bend. Jockey Prabhakaran on Extra Spark was always well positioned to make an early charge. The seven-year-old progeny of Sussex began to cover the leeway briskly in the straight and gained ascendancy in the final furlong. Momotaro for a moment looked like making the race a contest but it ceased to be one when Extra Spark began to lengthen his strides and increased the lead well beyond the scope of the pursuer. Kaguya Himei was third ahead of Michela who from a long way back ran on to finish a dismal fourth.

The trainer-jockey combination of Bobby and Prabhakaran had another long-priced winner through Moroccan who had it easy in the 1200 metres Nilgiris Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Skyjet came in for some support in the ring but the fancied runner lost all his chances at the gate itself and any hope of a possible win. Majestic Queen led from the start with Moroccan settled in about the third position well into the straight. Moroccan got into stride in the homestretch and the six-year-old got the better of Majestic Queen quite easily and went away for an easy victory over late-finishing Campeon who was another long shot resulting in a top dividend for forecast combination. Majestic Queen stayed on to take the third position. Veni Vidi Vici whose last run was the subject matter of an enquiry made no show.

Pratap Kamath trained Teri Adah recorded an encore in the 1200 metres Yamuna Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Delhi-based apprentice jockey A Ali Jafri who travels all the way to ride for Kamath, had Teri Adah lead the field as is the wont with this seven-year-old mare. Though Teri Adah looked vulnerable in the straight as she could not build a big lead, the narrow lead that she had stood her in good stead as she held off the late rally of Dazzle Away who took a long while to warm up but ended up chasing a losing cause in the end. Starstruck was in close proximity with the front-runner all through the race but failed to find something extra and even lost the runner-up berth position in the closing strides of the race by a whisker. Michael Eshwer trained Be Ready proved too good for the opposition by having control of the race from the start, expanding the lead as the race progressed to eventually check in by a widening margin of six lengths in the hands of apprentice jockey Abhilash. Catchy Charger ran on from behind to take the second place ahead of Samay Balwan.

Lesser fancied Star Atrium from the stables of Sharavanan swept the others off their feet from the start and recorded a facile win in the 1100 metres Charmudi Ghat Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Favourite Lord Iisley found the front-runner too speedy for comfort and had to settle for the second place ahead of Country`s Pace who made some progress in the final furlong.

Waterfall was the favourite for the 1600 metres Siachin Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Waterfall led the field well into the straight but in the final furlong, began to throw distress signals and gradually fell behind. The well backed Markus Sittikus then made a decisive thrust and stormed clear to win with a cluster of horses finishing behind in close order. Miss International, Eudora and Cato`s Call finished in the order mentioned behind the winner, with a long neck and short neck separating these placed horses.

Trainer Rakesh saddled the winners of both divisions of Star Angel Plate (Div I), a race for horses in the lowest category. Jockey Madhu Babu kept Everlasting Memory in a handy third position after heading the field for some distance, with Getafix doing the pace-making. Everlasting Memory smoothly moved up turning for home and overhauled the front-runner with minimum of effort and then bounced clear for a resounding win. La Piperi was second ahead of Brown Fairy. Beautiful Revenge was driven out for an easy win by jockey Sai Vamshi in the lower division of the race. Favourite Delta Delight attempted start to finish tactics but in the final furlong, faltered when Beautiful Revenge essayed a strong challenge. Coffee Time made some ground in the straight from way behind to occupy the third position.
