Capo De Capi swamps field in Juvenile Million

  March 18 , 2017

Irfan Ghatala trained Capo De Capi who had taken the mock race route to get the racing experience, proved that lack of a race run was not a hindrance for winning the Gr 3 Bangalore Juvenile Million, a terms race for three-year-olds, the feature event of concluding day`s races of the Bangalore Winter Racing Season on Saturday. Prasanna Kumar and Suraj Narredu emerged as the champion trainer and jockey of the season.

The last day though belonged to Y S Srinath who booted home four winners and gave a stiff fight for the championship to Suraj. For the second day running, the day races however did not run kindly to punters.

Lady Barrington was the firm favourite to win the million though the body weight indicated that the filly may have gone light. It did not have a bearing on the betting as the daughter of Excellent Art was backed to the exclusion of the rest as the other winners of debut races in the fray, were not impressive in their wins. Capo De Capi had showed out in a mock race and this half-brother to well performed Captain Morgan was also well supported to pull it off.

Turf Star hit the front as the field was dispatched for the seven-furlong trip with Lady Barrington in a handy second position ahead of Psychic Warrior, Capo De Capi and the rest. Angel Power did not get a good start and lost a couple of lengths in the process. Lady Barrington began to measure Turf Star in the straight but she did not look like she will draw clear because at this point of time, Capo De Capi began to move with a big run. Capo De Capi easily collared the favourite and stretched away for a facile win. Angel Power covered lot of ground in the straight but missed the runner-up berth by a whisker. Psychic Warrior made no improvement from his previous effort and was out of contention well before the race came on the boil.

Gregory Sandhu trained Lightning Strikes recorded his second straight win by staving off the challenge of Saladin to land the spoils in the 1200 metres Leading Stud Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 and above. Lightning Strikes was in a spot of bother as Trevor was not getting a clear run in the crowded field but once he manoeuvred out of a tricky situation, Lightning Strikes stretched out well to win from Saladin. The last named stumbled at the start and travelled wide all through the race in search of a forward position. Though Saladin covered enormous ground in the straight, Lighting Strikes romped home. Turf Striker held off Side Winder to get the third position.

Jockey David Allan who did not his act right on Saladin, rode a desperate finish on Tinderella who nosed out Admiral One to win the 1600 metres Champion Trainer Trophy, a race for horses rated 30 to 50. Apprentice jockey Ryan Ahmed had the lesser fancied Admiral One lead from the start and though the horse was under pressure all the way in the final two furlongs, he did well to keep the lead till the final stride of the race. Tanoura threatened to overhaul the front-runner but gassed out in the final stages of the race. Tinderella was struggling to pick up speed and looked a beaten cause but David Allan`s persistence and hard-riding enabled the filly to put her nose in front at the finish. Lamrei finished powerfully to snatch the third place from Tanoura.

Srinath`s strong riding on El Fenix fetched the desired result in the 1400 metres Leading Owner Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 45 to 65. Honour shaped to win but was beaten close home by El Fenix who was powerful at the post. Virat beat Native Elements for the third place while the fancied Eragon failed to get a forward position and finished poorly. Jockey Shoban Babu scored a rare win on Fair Game in a tight finish from favourite Hector in the lower division of the race. Fair Game slipped into the lead on entering the straight, displacing the front-running Possimpossible from that position and marched ahead. Suraj brought Hector to challenge the lesser fancied runner but Fair Game hung on gamely to win by a whisker. Majestic Style ran on to finish third.

Jockey Suraj Narredu must consider himself lucky to have escaped with just a scare on favourite Ninon whose erratic behaviour saw the jockey hitting the ground in the 2000 metres Champion Jockey Trophy, a race for horses rated 15 to 35. Ninon who had won last fortnight in impressive fashion, was once again made the favourite to win the race but the horse veered out violently approaching the first bend causing the jockey to be thrown off. The race was won by Prasanna Kumar trained Jersey Beauty who was left without the formidable adversary to tackle by virtue of the favourite hurting her chances, had no problem in keeping the late flourish of Tree Lounge, Ocean Park and Granada at bay.

Azhar Ali trained Chicago was forcefully ridden by Srinath to get the measure of Celestial Storm in the closing strides of the race in the 1200 metres Totalizator Cup (Div I), a race for horses rated 15 to 35. Chicago was strongly backed to give an encore and the five-year-old mare did not disappoint. Fioroloco ran on to finish third. Faraz Arshad trained Game Guy had come down considerably in ratings, having last won by two lengths against Frenemee 590 days ago in the 40 to 65 category. Game Guy had the benefit of a forward run and despite Raja Rao being in the saddle, came in for spirited support to end up as a strong favourite in the lower division of the race. Game Guy just about managed to oblige the huge expectations by thwarting the bid of Cool Springs by a neck.

Neil Darashah trained Midnight Sky came in for big support despite the recent form being inconsequential in the 1600 metres Leading Tipster Trophy, a race for horses in the lowest class. Midnight Sky let down huge expectations with a disappointing performance. The race was won by Kings Kid which had the assistance of Srinath. Kings Kid who established a winning lead in the final furlong and was not unduly troubled by the late flourish of Reverberating.

Another driving finish by Srinath enabled Dominic trained Shivalik Boy to get the better of Arziki in the day`s opener, the 1200 metres Somanathpur Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Tic Tac Toe was third.
