Kramer records an encore despite erratic effort

By: Frankel   March 25 , 2017

Malesh Narredu trained Kramer who was taking on relatively more backward horses, managed to record an encore in the 1200 metres Jimmy Bharucha Trophy, a race for three-year-olds, the feature event of Saturday`s Mumbai races despite veering out under pressure in the final furlong. The fact that Kramer was better prepared to win worked in favour of the favourite.

Trevor had no hesitation in taking Kramer to the front. The progeny of Phoenix Tower enjoyed an uncontested lead in front and skipped clear of the rest to establish what turned out to be a winning lead. Despite cutting an erratic course, Kramer still had enough ammunition to win the race. Cambridge who was making his debut, raced at the tail end till turning for home and made brisk progress along the rails to come within striking distance of the winner which is indicative of the fact that this progeny of Burden of Proof is ready to strike next time out. God`s Own plodded home to take the third position.

The runaway lead taken by Vision of Romance was an upsetting factor and the six-year-old gelding expended his energy in a manner which should definitely earn a rebuke for jockey S Sunil for his tactics. Elegant Beauty who was in about the third position at the final bend, made rapid progress in the straight and got the lead in the final furlong which enabled the favourite to prevail in the 1600 metres Samuel Nathan Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Glorious Eyes who graced the rear till turning for home, took her own time to warm up and as such her late rally went in vain. Nelsons Blood was third.

Cooji Katrak trained Palatial was obviously the superior horse in the fray for the 2400 metres Radha Sigtia Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 to 86 notwithstanding the fact that his last run was way below expectations. Backed strongly to win, Palatial appeared to have lost the plot as the six-year-old gelding graced the wrong end of the field and had to be driven hard by jockey Sandesh to get the desired response. The supporters of Palatial could heave a sigh of relief in the closing moments of the race when the favourite managed to get the better of Raees who had looked formidable. Frosty was third.

Altaf Hussain trained Angel Girl managed to prevail staving off the late rally of Zanzibaar to win the 1400 metres Tulipa Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Angel Girl was at the rear of the field and had considerable leeway to cover on the front-runners. Apprentice jockey D S Daman got the desired response from Angel Girl who got the better of Brabourne in the shadow of the post and then managed to reach the safety of the post before the late rallying Zanibaar could inflict any damage. Mansoor Shah trained Super Bolt won the lower division of the race at lucrative odds. Super Bolt who had been pretty consistent this season, measured the front-running Isinit close home. Deccan King rallied along the rails to snatch the runner-up berth from the long-time leader.

The credit for bringing off the biggest upset of the day went to trainer Mansoor Shah whose ward Triple Threat recorded her maiden win from five outings at fancy odds in the 1200 metres Diego Rivera Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. After tracking Highland Princess into the straight, Triple Threat shot ahead with about 300 metres left in the race and went beyond the reach of the rest in the hands of apprentice jockey Ayyar to land the spoils. Favourite Airlift came up too late on the scene and all that he achieved was to snatch the runner-up berth from Kookaburra by a whisker. Altaf Hussain trained Spiridon assumed control of the lower division of the race by storming ahead with a furlong out and had no problem in winning the race from King of Killen who left himself too much of leeway to cover in the final furlong. Sail Past was third.
