Castle Key finds his mark in the Sub-Area Cup

  July 22 , 2017

Arjun Mangalorkar trained Castle Key came into his own in the 1200 metres Karnataka Sub-Area Cup, a race for horses rated 60 and above, the feature event of Saturday`s Bangalore races. Castle Key had failed to make a mark in graded races but found the present opposition easy to tackle as he recorded a win after 371 days.

Castle Key who is bred as a full brother to Colts Championship Stakes winner Castlebridge, had done well only over sprints. However, he did not graduate into graded race company as expected. His last run with Denny Crane was promising as he had clocked a timing which was good enough to win in the present company Castle Key`s superiority was obvious as he covered up for the obvious inadequacies of apprentice jockey Anthony Raj and got the better of favourite Krieger quite easily. After Side Winder brought the field into the homestretch, Krieger shot ahead but he always looked vulnerable as he was unable to break free. Castle Key who was in the rear group, was shifted out and then the jockey ducked the horse towards the rails where the progeny of Burden of Proof covered ground rapidly and challenged the favourite and then overhauled the front-runner with a measure of comfort. Krieger saved the runner up berth position from fast-finishing Super Success, Champagne and Life Awaits. Super Success could have finished second but suffered an interference when Castle Key shifted towards the rails.

Gregory Sandhu trained Aeisir showed good improvement over his previous effort when thwarting the challenge of first-timer Standout in the 1200 metres Angel Dust Trophy, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Standout led from the start and was not inclined to give up easily. However, the run benefit helped Aeisir to prevail in the end. Favourite Cantabria was not capable of fulfilling the expectations and was a tame third. Standout should break the maidens rank soon, possibly next time out.

Sandhu had another winner through Idealist who recorded an encore in the 1400 metres Astronomic Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 15 to 35. Idealist had won against the run of expectations last time out and the quality of that win was suggestive of the fact that Idealist belonged to much higher class. This expectation was proved right when Idealist came into strong contention on turning for home and sped away in the final furlong from Firing Line to win the race in most impressive fashion. Girl With Pearl was backed with enthusiasm but the horse did not show the same spirit and performed poorly. T S Jodha who had been out of action for a considerable period of time after a track accident at Kolkata had resulted in him suffering a major fracture to his hand, had reason to be satisfied with his effort on favourite Raw Gold. The favourite fought a resolute battle all the way in the final furlong with Starline and eventually prevailed by a whisker. Trevor who found himself on the runner-up, was successful on just one ride while he was second best on three others. Love Is Life was faraway third.

Bora Bora had recorded an easy win in her last outing and an encore on cards in the 1100 metres Alekona Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 15 to 35. Bora Bora won comfortably but under pressure, drifted out of a straight course. Rising Brave rallied along the rails to take the second position ahead of Amazing Love who had a hiccup at the final bend and then was intimidated by the outward drift of the favourite. Trevor`s only success for the day thus came on Bora Bora. Narayan Gowda trained Kanthaka had listless efforts in his last seven runs but was the betting rage in the lower division of the race with no surface for to boost his credentials. The lack of a forward run went against the favourite as he took his own time to warm up to the task. By that time, long shot Breaking Away had broken clear. Kanthaka`s failure served to highlight the fact that in the absence of a strong educative run, such attempts are bound to fail. Another point is that these horses are subjected to not on job type of runs which somehow escape the scrutiny.

Samar Singh trained Queenofgoodtimes recorded a repeat win by winning the 1200 metres Manjri Plate, a race for horses rated 30 to 50. Queenofgoodtimes led from the start and though she drifted out of a straight course causing favourite Sterling Role to duck towards the rails, she was nevertheless too superior and won in good fashion. Interesting failed to show any spark and was a timid third ahead of Black Falcon who should be better off for her first effort in Bangalore having won a race at Delhi on the last occasion she raced.
