Beku, Beda vote to decide fate of Bangalore Turf Club

  October 23 , 2017

The survival of the BTC depends on passing the resolution to appease the government by way of granting all these 50 memberships to its nominees. There are many groups who are against the resolution. It is a herculean task for everyone interested in the welfare of the sport to bring about a consensus to ensure that the resolution goes through by a 3/4ths majority. The concerted efforts of all sections of the racing fraternity including racehorse owners, trainers, jockeys and the members of the club who are avid racegoers, is required to convince the majority. Much time has been lost in negative energy. Very little is achieved by taking an aggressive posture against the Chief Minister of the State who has mandated this from the club. The grim reality is that the club members have no other go but to vote for the resolution unless the destructive streak gets the better of the members.

The Bangalore Turf Club has already lost about 60 days of racing activity resulting in the loss of more than Rs 10 crores. This loss is bound to affect the stake money offered for winter racing. Already the daily wage employees have been left to despair. The professionals are better off because as of now they are not affected as there is a break in the season and the winter season is due to start in November. Their loss thus far has been minimal though they are at their wit`s end, despairing as to what is in store for them if the deadlock persists. They have nowhere to go because the other turf clubs can only accommodate only a minority. The majority will be in trouble.

Chairman of the Bangalore Turf Club Harimohan Naidu said that permission which the club had sought from the government under Article 60 to amend the Articles of the Association for purpose of increasing the membership has been received. ``We need 21 clear days for the special general body meeting to be called. This in effect means November 15 or 17 could be the probable day,`` he added. We hope that our members cooperate and ensure that the resolution is passed so that we can end the impasse, he said.

Majority of the race going members are all for giving in to the demand of the government though they may have issues about the way it should be given. A section of the members believes that the club should increase the membership by 150, giving the other 100 to different branches of the racing fraternity at a cost of Rs 15 lakh each. Since the club has written only for the increase of 50 membership, this school of thinking has no place in the present scheme of things. The members don`t want their monopoly to end totally by the influx of so many members. There are others who believe that membership should be offered to government nominees at a considerable cost so that the club benefits financially. With so many ideas flying all around, there is the attendant muddled thinking. The BTC still has several modalities to be worked. It would be interesting to see how the resolution is worded. This is also of critical importance.

As has been widely discussed, the substantial chunk of voters from Chickmagalur and Coorg have not taken kindly to the move to increase membership. Though most of these members are not active participants, they don`t want to squander the privileges. The value of membership is grossly exaggerated because it is not easily available. If the membership is thrown open to people capable of paying a big amount, the clamour for membership is bound to go away. The membership in other clubs like RWITC is available by paying about Rs 10 lakhs and the club has had no problem arising out of the substantial increase in membership. By restricting the membership, there has been unnecessary hype. The membership no doubt gives privileges, but they are more useful to racegoers. The present system benefits the absentee members because they are pampered during elections to membership by way of extravagant parties.

It`s hard to find a good resolution as it`s not black and white. It is a big fog of grey. Proper information is the solution to the resolution of the problem that has confronted the club threatening its 150-year existence. The solution must be found before long.

The members thus have a huge responsibility on their shoulders to make or destroy the institution.

Star Heaven, you must be the odd man out. What if the government wants more membership every year. What benefit anybody gets if the same people continue. Let there be greater participation. I don`t know why you should advocate the same set of members to enjoy for all time to come. The negative impact of the same people being there is already damaging the sport. Very people eligible to contest and they have wrecked the system.

The RWITC gives membership regularly to aspiring members. There are more than 1000 voting members and another two to three thousand associates. What harm has it done to racing? I think the membership should be given against payment of substantial money like Rs 15 lakhs. It will help swell the coffers of the club. Right now the members pay nothing to the club. Their subscription is just Rs 20 per month and the same members demand the moon for the king`s ransom that they pay!!!

I cannot understand why BTC members are so reluctant. I am sure they are members of social clubs. Can they impose their will like they do in BTC? Can they behave the way they do in BTC in other clubs and get away? I think the government is making a grave error. They should not be satisfied at just getting 50 nominees in. They should hand over the administration of racing to some corporate company so that there is greater accountability. The members here usurp all the facilities for themselves and give jail like conditions for paying public. The conditions for the public are appalling. The members lack maturity and lack the basic courtesies.

I saw the members of the managing committee of Bangalore Turf Club in Mysore. What were they doing in Mysore when activities at their club have come to a standstill. They could have stayed back, fixed the date for the general body instead of enjoying the free hospitality. Now they have to get back to Bangalore, call for a committee meeting, draft the resolution and then announce the date. This will result in at least four to five days being wasted. They need to work honestly to restore racing instead of having hidden agenda.

The BTC members knows only the privilege and perks of racing sports. For them responsibility and spirit of the game is beyond sight. One who don`t care for the responsibility should not be given respect. Atleast now,if these members donot understand their responsibility and act to the necessity, they should be thrown out of the BTC. No responsibility no respect.

Only one occasion we are being relaxed , but it is very bad that we are not having race from 60 days, so please do necessary gap adjustment and conclude the rift with concern authorities and ensure to start the racing event.

The membership should NOT be given to govt. guys.
Today they will ask 50 then100 .Nothing is free .Even the existing members having no stake in racing should be charged 15lakh each person.Family extra or the existing members should be shown the door.
What use are these members if they have no stake in racing and the Govt should be taken to Court for long term gain of the Club .

I think the membership of the club should be increased every year by at least 30 members. This way there will be an infusion of fresh blood and greater participation of members. What is the point in electing members children year after year? They don`t contribute creatively. More the merrier and greater accountability. After all, we have the world`s largest population and a functioning democracy.

I hope the members of the club are not selfish enough to harm racing when they have enjoyed great facilities and given nothing in return. The time has come for them to act with maturity. They cannot act like adamant school kids.

The first thing will be to dissolve the entire existing club membership and form new members club who have racing experience , interests & knowledge . Otherwise the best option is that the Govt lease the club to private companies to operate racing .

I don`t know why there is a clamour for membership. This is the only club in the world where the death of a member is celebrated because of the vacancy it causes. There are several children of members waiting in the queue. Whenever a death of a member is announced, there is visible glee on the faces of people who ware waiting to contest to become members. Pretty repulsive indeed.
