Trainer Satheesh hogs the limelight with four winners

By: Tippu Sultan   November 20 , 2017

Hilton Sequeira trained Ambitious Approach asserted his supremacy in the 1200 metres Umraolal Gutpa Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 58 to 78, the feature event of races held on Monday at Malakpet. Trainer Satheesh was in the limelight saddling four winners through Prince Caspian, Dear Friend, Racing Ikon and Bouncer.

Ambitious Approach was backed to the exclusion of the rest in the feature event as the four-year-old has been in imposing form losing just once to Fashion High in his last four outings. Though the jockeys were not permitted to carry whips in the race, it had no bearing on Ambitious Approach who was aided by a strong pace set by Paprika who attempted runaway tactics. Jockey Aneel could settle Ambitious Approach in the second position as Paprika tried to run the others off their feet but tired out in the final furlong. Ambitious Approach measured the front-runner with ease and won in convincing fashion over Oh Dear. Paprika weakened to finish third.

Fashion High however disappointed in the lower category, running a tame third in the 1200 metres Mauritius Turf Club Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 42 to 62. Fashion High who had beaten Ambitious Approach in her last run was backed quite spiritedly to oblige but the progeny of Western Aristocrat disappointed with a timid performance. This season, trainer Netto`s horses haven`t been maintaining form and these horses are struggling to repeat their performances. Prince Caspian looked vulnerable in the final furlong but produced that bit extra to skip away from Highly Acclaimed. Vittal Deshmukh trained Newport had won his last outing in tremendous fashion and a repeat win was on cards in the lower division of the race. However, Newport was allowed to run at long odds with Meritocracy attracting all the betting. In the race, itself New Port faced no threat as he led from the top of the straight and easily held off the challenge of That`s My Class and Starlight. The last named nosed out Meritocracy to return good dividends on place investment.

Hope Is Eternal and Creator were the market fancies to win the 1600 metres Soviet Star Plate, a race for horses rated 26 to 46. The race was won by long shot Somerset who had the race in his control all the way in the final furlong. Though Hope Is Eternal made a good rally along the rails, the winner proved too good in the end. Air Strike edged out Treasure Strike to get the third place. Rutilant who attempted runaway tactics weakened to finish fifth while Creator was not spotted to have any realistic chance in the final furlong despite being positioned to make an assault.

Satheesh trained Bouncer was taken on a start to finish mission by jockey Nakhat Singh and the fancied runner just about held on to win from Sir Legend, the 1100 metres Grace Hanover Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 26 to 46. Bounce showed lot of speed from the gates to lead the way and though the six-year-old gelding came under intense pressure from Sir Legend, Bouncer had enough legs to reach the safety of the winning post. Pegasus was third. Trainer Satheesh also had the winner of the lower division of the race where two of his wards, Racing Ikon and Moon Walker were involved in a tight finish. Moon Walker appeared to have stolen the initiative from Racing Ikon but the latter fought back resolutely to get the nod by a whisker. Rapidest nosed out Abracos to save place money.

Laxman Singh trained Realmoffantasy made a smashing winning debut in the 1200 metres Medak Plate, a race for two-year-olds. Realmoffantasy had both speed and class to leave the opposition stranded to win as she pleased. Shiloh and Tiger of the Sea were more forward than the rest to occupy the second and third positions.

Satheesh rounded off his tally for the day with the fourth winner through Dear Friend in the 1200 metres Time And Place Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated up to 30, the concluding race of the day. Dear Friend took over the running with two furlongs left in the race from front-running Reach The Heights and bounced clear to win by a widening margin of four lengths. Tough Princess staved off Fabulous Art to get the third place.
