Naazaan pips Leading Legend on the post

By: Tippu Sultan   December 3 , 2017

Laxman Singh trained Naazaan scored a typical late surge win over Leading Legend in the 1600 metres RWITC Plate, a race for horses rated 58 to 78, the feature event of Sunday`s Hyderabad races. The fancied Leading Legend shaped to win when he shot into the lead with a furlong left in the race and he appeared to have covered all the horses as he came from the penultimate position but was surprised by the zestful performance of Naazaan who made a big rally along the rails to steal a last stride win.

Handy Man and Leading Legend were the horses which were in serious betting. Handy Man was never in the hunt and finished a dismal last which is quite the feature of racing on the local circuit. Leading Legend who was giving company to Handy Man in the rear till approaching for the final bend, steadily covered the leeway on the front-runners and went ahead with a furlong to go in the race. Leading Legend looked a clear winner at this stage but was caught unawares by Naazaan who made a rally on the inside to snatch the race. Naazaan had in the past too won in similar fashion. Doroteo was third.

The followers of trainer Donald Netto burnt their fingers as fancied runners after fancied runners from his stable ran way below expectations. Vancouver received considerable support to win the 1200 metres Artillery Cup (Div I), a race for horses rated 42 to 62. The favourite for the race though was Highly Acclaimed who had let down huge expectations last time out. This time out, Highly Acclaimed was seen in different light as the three-year-old ran freely in front and skipped clear in the final furlong to win by a widening margin of four lengths over Starlight who nosed out Supurinto to get the runner-up berth. For the record, Vancouver was under pressure right from the start and eventually finished a dismal last. Leo D`Silva trained Asteria won the lower division of the race at long odds. Asteria chased Symbol of Gold into the straight before shooting ahead. Though three runners charged home in sight of the post, Asteria held on to win from Mahathi, Ikigai and favourite Fashion High who was a big disappointment because she ran at very cramped odds which was because her defeat looked out of question for most people.

Prasad Raju trained Strengthofbeauty came up with a sustained burst of speed to get the better of front-running Hunter`s Pride in the closing strides of the race to win the 1400 metres Royal Tern Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Favourite Wine N Nine who took a fair good start, lost touch with the front-runners till turning for home and hence left herself with too much of leeway to cover. Her finishing effort fetched her the third place but with better positioning, the favourite could have altered the result.

Leo D`Silva trained Carnival Express has been in good nick this season and the one-sided support for her in the 1400 metres Rainbows For Life Plate, a race for horses rated up to 25, was not unexpected. The rest of the runners did not have encouraging form. In the event, Carnival Express made a decisive surge in the final furlong and won with a measure of comfort from Brioni and Time Is Luck.

When Sequeira trained Shakespeare broke into a big lead going into the final furlong, it looked as though the front-runner would be able to carry his superiority to the post in the 1100 metres Banarsilal Gupta Memorial Cup (Div I), a race for horses rated 26 to 46. The complexion of the race changed once Magical Skill picked up steam. The four-year-old devoured ground and collared the front-runner well before the winning post and went away for a comfortable win in the hands of apprentice Boppanna. Chinese Thought ran on to finish third. Last start winner Rose Eternal measured the front-running Spaceship with a furlong left in the race and charged ahead. Shandaar came up with a big effort from way off the pace but fell short by half a length in the lower division of the race. Bharat Queen nosed out the longtime leader Space Ship to save place money.

Arjun Anne trained Dunkirk won the 1200 metres Cordon Rouge Plate, a race for maiden two-year-olds in emphatic fashion at big odds. Dunkirk chased Exclusivewind into the straight before storming ahead with two furlongs left in the race. The progeny of Surfrider then established a sizeable lead which was good enough to see the filly through to victory. Favourite Inci made a late charge but found the winner happily reaching the winning post. Exclusivewind held off Soul Empress to get the third position.
