Mahateji comes good in Golconda Oaks

By: Tippu Sultan   January 3 , 2018

It has been a year of great achievement for Usha Stud Farm`s resident sire Multidimensional who had yet another individual classic winner through Mahateji who made a quantum jump in her performance capabilities by decisively winning the Gr 2 Golconda Oaks, the third classic of the season, on Wednesday at Hyderabad. Mahateji appreciated the step-up in distance by coming from way off the pace to provide jockey Fergus Sweeney with his first classic success in India.

Dallas Todywalla trained Selfie Star was the firm favourite based on hype and expectations even though this challenger from Mumbai had no big performance to boast of. The fact that David Allan was astride was enough reason to back the progeny of Excellent Art notwithstanding the fact that the sire`s progeny is suspect over trips which demand more stamina than speed. In the event, Selfie Star was seen struggling at the final bend itself and was out of contention long way from home. Eternal Angel who was handily placed in about the fourth position till approaching the final bend was hurried to the front by jockey N S Parmar. The progeny of Serious Spender had a good cushion going into the final furlong but faltered completely in the final 100 metres. Mahareji who came up with big strides in the final furlong got past Eternal Angel to record a comfortable win. Nanhipari who was overhauled by Eternal Angel, came up with a second wind and got the runner-up berth ahead of Classic Dancer who made a late rally to save place money.

The 2000 metres Raja Bahadur Venkatram Reddy Memorial Plate, a race for horses rated 58 to 78, had an open look about it as several horses had a chance of pulling it off. One of the fancied runners Zelus shot ahead with a furlong left in the race but could not sustain his brilliance to the post as long shot Batur came home with a big rush to nail the front-runner. Destined Dynamite warmed up late in typical fashion but this time out, he was not able to cover up the leeway and win. He fell short and finished third. Tootsie Roll ran below par.

On the day when trainer Netto`s ward gave a body blow to the punters by winning against the run of expectations and loosing when strongly fancied, Gorgeous Lady was another to give a shock treatment by winning the 1100 metres Pocharam Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Southern Crown was shaping to win when Gorgeous Lady put paid to the pretensions of the fancied runner by sailing ahead in the closing strides of the race.

Netto`s Wave Rider made a winning debut in the 1400 metres Silky Babe Plate (Div I), a race for maiden two-year-olds. In the hands of jockey Fergus Sweeney, Wave Rider shot ahead with a furlong left in the race and bounced clear despite going wide under pressure and won by a handsome margin over Staridar and Drogan. Srinivas Reddy trained Classic Remark who had the benefit of a forward run won the lower division of the race with aggressive running in front, keeping the challenge of Exclusivewind at bay. Durango was third.

Leo D`Silva trained Asteria had figured on board on all the three outings during the season but was not expected to strike winning form in the 1200 metres Solitaire Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 42 to 62. Asteria shot ahead inside the final furlong and resolutely held off the strong bid of Vancouver and Magical Skill to land the spoils at long odds. Favourite Fashion High made no show. Another Leo D`Silva ward Palisades Park too won the lower division of the race at nourishing odds in a similar fashion. Hitting the front when going into the last furlong, Palisades Park had enough legs to last out the trip in front with Celtic Queen closing in with a big effort only to fall short. Negress Pearl was third. Favourite Amazing Response finished poorly in the penultimate position.

A mediocre field was in the fray for the 1100 metres Cyndy Plate, a race for horses rated up to 30. Out of the 14 contenders in the fray, only Time Is Luck was a winner of three races while the rest barring Sefarina were all maidens. Though there was no flow of money, in keeping with the trend of day`s proceedings, long shot Time Is Luck shot off like a scalded cat from the gates and lasted out to win from another long shot My Choice and Pride And Joy.
