Breezeofthesouth bounces back to winning form

By: Tippu Sultan   January 21 , 2018

Hilton Sequeira trained Breezeofthesouth bounced back to winning form after a below-par effort in the 1400 meters T Chandrashekar Reddy Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 74 and above, the feature event of Monday`s Hyderabad races. Favourite Mr Baahubali was consumed by his own suicidal runaway attempt in front and it paved the way of Breezeofthesouth to triumph from late-rallying Ashwa Raftar.

Mr Baahubali runs freely in front but his success will always depend on the ability of the jockey to judge the pace in front as also his ability to conserve the energy of the horse for the homestretch run. Apprentice jockey Kunal Bunde was not up to the task as he bolted to the front from the start, had runaway lead which got eventually reduced to a thin margin at the top of the straight. Breezeofthesouth who was lying in wait easily collared the front-runner and sped home. Ashwa Raftar was the best of the ones charging from behind, but the post was sighted in time for the lesser fancied runner before he could be overhauled. Ashwa Raftar showed intent after a few listless runs this season and he could be exploited to win in the current form. Colours was third. Time For Fun had credentials but was running after a longish break perhaps laid low by a niggle and this could be the reason why she was never in the hunt.

Satheesh trained Star Gazer was the on money favourite to win the 1400 metres Sweet Girl Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 26 to 46. The favourite ran freely in front and had a big lead going into the final furlong. However, Star Gazer began to see stars close home when Turf Legend, with an aggressive effort, came home with a powerful effort to cause a big upset. Shivalik Arrow was third. Arjun Anne trained Yagna was the medium of a quiet touch in the lower division of the race. Though he hadn`t hit the board, his last run was good enough for this company as his relative form was better. Backed spiritedly, Sai Kiran kept Yagna in a handy position before setting alight the fancied runner with 350 metres left in the race. The progeny of Mull of Kintyre easily sped past the opposition for an emphatic win. News O War held off Jumeira Express to get the runner-up berth.

Donald Netto trained Gorgeous Lady stood out in the 1200 metres Salarjung Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 26 to 46. Deepak Singh kept Gorgeous Lady in a handy position as Wild Heart set the pace. Gorgeous Lady steadily improved places in the straight and by the final furlong was hailed a winner as he had broken into an unassailable lead. Chinese Thought ran on to take the second place ahead of Aston Doulton. Sequeira trained Shakesphere shaped to win the lower division of the race when he cruised into the lead with 300 metres left in the race. He had a good cushion but floundered in sight of the post. Long shot Golden Image flew home to edge past the front-runner. Prime Time was third.

The 1600 metres Mayors Cup saw the biggest upset of the day. Arjun Anne trained Gunner descended on the scene from nowhere and his aggressive final furlong spurt saw the six-year-old get the better of Supremo close home. Ashwa Ashoka too closed with a rush only to miss the berth narrowly in the three-horse finish. Favourite Meritocracy was lost in the crowd.

Shezad Abbas trained Man Of The Series had always obliged whenever he came in for spirited support in the ring. And yet again he obliged huge expectations with a late burst of speed in the 1200 metres Next Move Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated up to 25. New Hope was second. Touch of Gold finished on well to edge out Dawning Hope who was in contention till the final furlong. Faiyaz Shaikh trained Glorious Grey trounced the opposition in the lower division of the race winning quite easily from Canon Fury and Conroy. Favourite Aalishaan disappointed.
