Malesh Narredu trained Kramer bounced back to winning form after a below part effort in the 1200 metres Sir Charles Forbes Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 to 86, the feature event of a lacklustre card of eight-events that were gone through at Mumbai on Thursday evening. The Jaydev Mody colours were very prominent as his wards won four of the eight races, losing one race by the proverbial whisker.
Stipig has been poor in Mumbai despite the presence of so many of them. They seem to be doing a mechanical job or pulling up hapless professionals who don`t have the clout or support within the system. In and out running of horses is the name of the game. Horses which would have finished down the field, suddenly sprout wings as it were and win against the run of expectations confounding the student of form. Neither the information doing the rounds, or the form of the horses is any help. It is just a matter of luck that if one picks up winners at frequent intervals. There is not a single stable which could be considered trustworthy for punters to follow on a consistent basis. Everything is misleading so much so that nothing, but despair awaits a punter.
In the feature event, Kramer was pushed to take over the running after a hesitant start. Governor General was sluggish at the gates. Kramer led the field and despite coming under pressure in the final furlong from Excellent Gold and Governor General, he had something in reserve and pulled away in the end for a comfortable win. Excellent Gold weakened closer home which enabled Governor General to grab the runner-up berth. Excellent Gold appears to have reached his mark or possibly he is crying for more ground.
Malesh Narredu trained Hudson had finished 10 out of fourteen runners, about 11.7 lengths behind the winner. The four-year-old filly turned the form upside down with an emphatic performance, winning the 1200 metres Secret Romeo Plate (Div I), a race for horses in the lowest category by a widening margin of six lengths. Star Anise was a surprise second ahead of Exosphere and Xixo. It was tough to pick any hors as being outstanding because the form was not clear cut. The same trainer and jockey combination of Malesh Narredu and Pradeep Chouhan combined to win the lower division of the race as well. Montecasino was one of the fancied runners in what was an open betting affair. Chouhan was able to steer Montecasino to a win over Synchronicity in a tight finish, with both these horses racing very wide. The latter was unlucky to have lost the race and the five-year-old mare could have been the winner with better luck in the homestretch.
Chouhan was unable to help Lord Commander to triumph in the 1200 metres Ice Magic Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Lord Command cruised past the front-running Philadelphia inside the final 300 metres and it looked as though the fancied runner would romp home. However, he began to slacken in the final 100 metres as Lilac Time came charging home and managed to nose out the fancied runner to win at fancy odds. Man Of Word who was also in serious betting, was full of running but was caught between Lord Commander and Lilac Time and he could not get a good run at a crucial stage of the race. Arsenal edged out Highland Woods to get the third place. Despite being baulked for a clear run at the top of the straight, apprentice jockey Zeeshan did not panic as he brought Alyaties round the field and the progeny of Noverre swiftly picked up momentum to get the better of front-running Ridgewood Star in the lower division of the race. Aquarius was third.
Narendra Lagad trained Godsword was one of the few fancied runners of his stable to oblige during the season. Godsword has had a forward run and the progeny of Diffident readily obliged in the 1000 metres M D Mehta Trophy, a race for maiden three-year-olds drawing clear in the final furlong and winning with a measure of comfort from Clark Kent and Bddyholy.
Faisal Abbas trained Clymene no doubt looked superior in the1000 metres Trance Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65 and with a submissive opposition to take on, the task became all the easier. Jockey Sandesh had an arm-chair ride on the winner, the progeny of Western Aristocrat winning as she pleased. Wise Child ran to finish second best for the third time in a row. Ascension`s hat-trick bid failed, and the filly ended up a tame third.
Pesi Shroff trained Massimo was the firm favourite to win the 1600 metres Emperado Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. The task was accomplished but jockey David Probert had to work on the favourite all the way in the straight to ward off the threat of Honourable Eyes who after being overhauled, came up with a second wind. Sumaaq was third.
