Poseidon surprises in Governor’s Trophy

  March 16 , 2018

Lokanath trained Poseidon pulled off a surprise win in the 1600 metres Governor`s Trophy, a terms race for three-year-olds, the feature event of Friday`s Bangalore races. Technically, this was the last day of the season, but the season is set to end next week, with two extra day`s racing scheduled. Favourite Summer Palace tried hard to make a match of it but did not find an extra gear.

The quality of the field in the Governor`s Trophy was modest. Summer Palace who had finished second best in his maiden outing was widely expected to show improvement and get the better of the rest. Poseidon no doubt had run a suggestive race in his debut outing, but the second run was a disappointment and indicated that he had regressed. This may be the reason why the horse ran at long odds.

Jockey Jagadeesh who rarely get to ride winners in these type of terms races was astride the long shot. He had no hesitation to take the horse on a start to finish more in the hope of outstaying the rest rather than with real conviction. Summer Palace was in close proximity while the rest were spaced out behind but not making any impression. Poseidon came home to a handy lead and did not weaken much to the chagrin of jockey Trevor who had hoped that his horse, Summer Palace would respond to his urgings. Poseidon kicked on merrily and comfortably held off Summer Palace to land the rich spoils. Velocidad took the third place ahead of Indian Pharaoh.

Irfan Ghatala trained Automatic had run a brilliant race in Mauritania`s Guineas win and that run suggested he was a cinch for the 1400 metres Leading Stud Cup, a race for horses rated 45 to 65. More often than not, horses which look like certainties based on their runs in the classics have failed because horses tend to run above their known capability because the pace of the race would have suited them fine. Automatic had the lead going into the final furlong but was surprised close home by last start winner St Pauli`s Girl who finished with tremendous grit in the hands of jockey Trevor Patel to snatch the verdict on the post. Aaron The Baron ran on to finish third.

A quiet touch was brought off by trainer Neil Darashah in the 1800 metres Leading Owner Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 and above. Royal Sceptre had the benefit of a forward run in a six-furlong race 48 days ago and was stepped up in distance. The nine-furlong trip suited Royal Sceptre perfectly as the well-backed runner led all the way in the hands of jockey Arshad Alam and checked in comfortably clear of Sagrada and Fabulous. Royal Sceptre was once considered as a classic prospect but did not make the grade.

Padmanabhan trained Volatility had it easy in the 1200 metres Leading Tipster Cup, a race for horses rated 0 to 20. Backed to the exclusion of the rest, the daughter of China Visit left the fielding standing in the final furlong to win by a widening margin of five lengths over late-rallying Shivalik Boy. Gumption who held the fort till overhauled by the eventual winner weakened but managed to hold on to the third position thwarting the bid of Moonlight Love by a neck.

Praveen Jesu led in a well-backed winner through Back of Beyond who fought off a strong battle with favourite Reference before surging ahead in the final strides of the race to win the 1600 metres Champion Trainer Trophy, a race for horses rated 30 to 50. Reference battled on resolutely in front but closer home, could not ward off the threat from the eventual winner on whom apprentice Nazrul Alam was forceful. Fresh Star too made a strong bid but had to settle for the third slot.

Srinath drove out favourite Allsettogo for an easy win in the 1200 metres Champion Jockey Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 15 to 35. Allsettogo stormed ahead in the final furlong and won by a comfortable margin of over three lengths. Land of Liberty and Princess Rumela took the next two slots on the frame. Classic Cut who was making a belated debut as a four-year-old was well prepared with the help of a mock race to strike in the lower division of the race. Jockey Trevor Patel had an armchair ride to victory on the favourite who bounced clear with a furlong left in the race to win by a widening margin of six lengths over Reverence who came from the wrong end of the field to finish a notable second. Smile of Courage who attempted start to finish tactics weakened to place third.

Inayathulla trained Quick Action benefitted from the good forward run and shot ahead in the homestretch after chasing Desert Guilt into the straight and recorded an easy win in the 1200 metres Totalizator Cup, a race for horses rated 15 to 35. Zala Princess made a late dash but had to be satisfied with the runner-up berth.
