Desert God provides Sandesh third straight success

By: Tippu Sultan   September 9 , 2018

The move might have been done with the intent of attracting more entries, but the purpose was not served. Some of the best-known horses of Indian racing calendar have won this race and in the coming years, the race may become yet another race, losing the prestige associated with it. It is a pity that the authorities are meddling with such races and want to force mediocrity in every sphere of racing.

Desert God who has maintained his form after missing more than one year due to his foray at Dubai and England, had won the Bangalore St Leger during the summer reason. Though he was conceding 10 kgs to another Leger winner, it was clear that he belonged to a different league and he would defy it. It would have been sad if somebody like Reunion had beaten him getting so much pull in weight for it would have meant bringing down the stature of a champion.

Jockey Sandesh who was reunited with Desert God took the champion on a start to finish mission with Reunion in close attendance. The order remained the same throughout and in the final furlong, Reunion put up a semblance of a fight before Desert God skipped away. Captain Morgan was a disappointing third while Western Wind was fourth. For jockey Sandesh, it was a hat-trick of wins in this event having ridden Desert God on both occasions besides partnering last year`s winner Mathaiyus.

Donald Netto trained Rahul`s Pet had gone off the boil for a long time but bounced back to winning form in his last outing. He maintained the form and recorded an encore in the 1200 metres Soli and Gool Poonawalla Memorial Gold Cup, a race for horses rated 75 and above, Moon Dancer who had given a dismal account of himself over an extended trip was widely reckoned to regain his winning touch over the sprint and was made the favourite. The last run of Moon Dancer was too bad to expect him to immediately strike back. In the event, Moon Dancer, despite staying in touch with the leaders, couldn`t even figure on board. Moon Dancer has reached his mark and he can win on the day he finds the company suitable. Rahul`s Pet won the race in dramatic fashion. After being in the rear of the field till turning for home, jockey Rohit Kumar was finding it difficult to get spaces in the crowded field but managed to get a clear run inside the final furlong. The lesser fancied runner immediately produced a tremendous burst of speed to storm clear and win with a measure of comfort. That`s My Class finished with a big effort to take the second place ahead of Prospero, Dance Oh Dance and Moon Dancer who finished in close order.

Sandesh brought Champion Bull with a late dash and the fancied runner pounced on the front runners and shot ahead in the shadow of the post and held off the grand rally of Palace On Wheels to win the 1200 metres Prince of Berar Plate, a race for horses rated 42 to 62. Scooby Dooby Do finished third with a late rally. Arc of History who was well positioned had no answer when those from behind came home with big efforts. Favourite Titus too failed to make an impression.

Longshot On The Fire from the stables of trainer Ravinder Singh made a desperate attempt to win start to finish and put up a dogged fight to the favourite Wave Rider who however got strong closer home to record a comfortable win in the 1600 metres Alluri Seetharama Raju Cup, a race for horses rated 42 to 62. The winner who is trained by Hilton Sequeira was kept in about the fourth position before the jockey of the moment Akshay Kumar made his move.

Laxman Singh trained Siyabonga who was backed to the exclusion of the rest, had no problem in obliging the huge expectations with a runaway win in the 1200 metres Rani Rudramma Cup, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Promiseofhappiness led the field well into the straight before jockey Kuldeep Singh had Siyabonga take over the running. The progeny of Kingda Ka immediately picked up great speed and burst clear to win as she pleased. Promiseofhappiness managed to edge out Tiger of the Sea to get the runner-up berth.

Ravinder Singh trained long shot Vijays Delight assumed command inside the final furlong and easily thwarted the late bid of fancied Indian Dreams in the 1400 metres Star of Heaven Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 26 to 46. The chances of Indian Dreams was badly compromised by the poor start that he had and thereafter it was an uphill task for the second favourite. Sunday Carnival, the favourite, occupied the third slot. Akshay Kumar brought Faisal Hassan trained fancied runner Ta Ta with a late dash and this was good enough to get the better of Vijay`s Empress in a tight finish in the lower division of the race. Favourite Miracle King went on a start to finish mission but slackened in the final stages of the race and weakened to finish third.

Anant Vatsalya trained Dublin made it a one-horse race in the 1100 metres Red Rufus Plate, a race for horses rated up to 30. The well-backed Dublin had the race sewn up a long way from home. The fight if any was for the minor positions with Invasion nosing out Ice Mummy to get the second position.
