Salazaar comes good in Governor`s Cup

  October 12 , 2018

Irfan Ghatala trained Salazaar came good in the 2000 metres Governor`s Cup, a terms race for four-year-olds and over, the feature event of Friday`s Mysore races. Favourite Kangra who was set to concede weight to all her rivals faltered towards the closing stages of the race which allowed Salazaar to make a good rally from behind to overhaul her in the shadow of the post.

Kangra was a better achiever in her career and because of her accomplishments, she had to concede weight to another Derby winner in Salazaar. Kangra had always won the hard way, with aggressive front-running tactics where her cruising speed held her in good stead. When a horse always runs this way, there are all attendant dangers in that the pace of the race could always be the undoing of the horse as Indian jockeys rarely ride two long distance races alike. The judgment of pace has always been the undoing of many a good horse. In the case of Kangra she was carrying the top weight of 60 kgs. Sandesh took Kangra on a start to finish mission and went at a good clip. Salazaar took a hesitant start and lost a few lengths at the start which was to prove to his advantage.

Sandesh was forced to go on Kangra at a good clip as Mumbai challenger B Fifty Two was hot on her heels. Kangra`s speed had most of her rivals gasping as she came home a few lengths clear and retained the lead going into the final furlong. Kangra looked capable of lasting out till the time jockey Srinath brought Salazaar with a ground-saving effort along the rails. The progeny of Burden of Proof covered the leeway swiftly and engaged the tiring Kangra in the battle for supremacy. The hard riding of Srinath ensured that Salazaar overhauled the favourite close home for a win by a shade more than a length. B Fifty Two who fell behind in the straight when the pace quickened came with a second wind to take the third position.

Irfan Ghatala`s other ward Iris looked outstanding in the 1200 metres Smt Maliniraje Prasad Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 and above. Iris had a bagful of wins and her last win was eye-catching as the filly had lost ground at the start and yet won the race slamming the opposition. The price on her shortened significantly close to race time despite the presence of less heralded jockey Anjar Alam in the saddle. Anjar brought Iris along the rails from about the fourth or fifth position at the final bend. The progeny of Lord Admiral picked up momentum along the rails and gained the upper hand in the final furlong to win with a measure of comfort from Royal Serenity who held off Tigris for the second position.

Another horse who looked unbeatable in the day`s card was Sriram Komandur`s Diamond Rays who was running in the 1200 metres Fair Wood Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Srinath had an arm-chair ride on the on-money favourite, bringing his horse into contention in the final furlong. The Sans Craintes Stud Farm bred three-year-old bounced clear with a minimum of fuss to win by a widening margin of four lengths. Kodiac Queen edged out Ice Dancer to snatch the runner-up berth.

M R Singh trained Indian League brought off a big upset in the day`s opener, the 1200 metres Nugu Dam Plate (Div I), a race for horses in the lowest class. Jockey Sai Kiran had Indian League lead the field and though he looked vulnerable to the onslaught of Oro Plato who finished with a rush, he just held on by a whisker to return dividends of more than 30 to 1 on a tenner. Secret Prayer was a close third. Favourite Extremelydangerous was nowhere to be sighted. Darius Byramji trained Halfsies made amends in the lower division of the race for the last failure as a favourite. Srinath had Halfsies take over the running with a furlong left in the race and the favourite stormed clear to record an easy win. Durer nosed out Al Dorado to get the second position.

Bobby trained Contributor had won twice and looked capable of completing the hat-trick of wins. The three-year-old was well supported though the betting was tentative as evidenced by the action in the ring. Jockey Prabhakaran took Contributor on a start to finish mission and though the favourite drifted out alarmingly in the final furlong, he proved too superior to the rest as he won by a margin of over three lengths despite the hiccup. Lord Lisley got the second position from Tax Free.

Rakesh trained Chandini recorded an encore with a patented late burst of speed in the 1600 metres Original Vel B Ashok Kumar Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Favourite Dixieland appeared to be on course when she shot into the lead in the final furlong but was caught up and overhauled by Chandini in the dying moments of the race. Bonito was third.
