Fair Game rewarded for consistency in last day’s feature

  October 26 , 2018

Kishan Thomas trained Fair Game had been consistent though wins had eluded the seven-year-old mare on a regular basis as she was falling short. However, things fell in place in the 1400 metres B K Krishnadevaraj Urs Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 and above, the feature event of concluding day`s races of the Mysore Racing Season on Friday. Fair Game chased another fancied runner Surf Romance well into the straight before asserting her supremacy in the final furlong.

Surf Romance was widely expected to record an encore but Fair Game`s last run against a better-quality opposition made her a formidable competitor. This belief was backed by a lot of support in the betting ring with both Surf Romance and Fame Game becoming joint favourites. Jockey T S Jodha was alert to the task, keeping Fair Game handy and got busy in the straight. The progeny of Chevalier was not hard-pressed to get the better of Surf Romance. Country Music ran on to finish third.

A confident gamble was brought off on Master of Universe in the 1200 metres One Life To Love Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. The progeny of Dancing Forever had last won 451 days ago and hadn`t run for 360 days. There was no doubt about the class of the four-year-old who in his only win had won by a widening margin of nine lengths on tight reins. The four-year-old came in for sustained betting from higher odds to run as a favourite displacing Lagopus who started out as a short-priced favourite. The horse sported bandages on all four legs, was subjected to veterinary check before being allowed to run. In the hands of jockeys Nirmal Jodha, Master of Universe bolted to the front, had more than six lengths lead all the way into the straight and extended it more than seven lengths when crossing the winning post. Three horses finished in a line with Domitia necking out Travieso for the runner-up berth with Lagopus another nose behind.

The 1400 metres Jog Falls Plate (Div I), a race for horses in the lowest category was won by Reverberating who was backed with amazing confidence from a higher quote to end up as a strong favourite. The Kishan Thomas trainee shot ahead in the final furlong and built enough cushion. Ted With Me covered acres of ground in the end and came tantalizingly close to toppling the favourite. Spinning Chakram was third. The lower division of the race was won by lesser fancied New Beginning from the stables of Tejaswi. Jockey Prashanth Dhebe bolted with New Beginning who swept the others off their feet and had the race well sewn up a long way from home. New Beginning won by six lengths over My Valentine and Little Brown Jug. The fancied Fierce Fighter and Winx were not spotted at the busy end.

Three-year-old Lion from the stables of trainer Michael Eshwer recorded an encore in the 1400 metres Nainital Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. The favourite had to weather the storm during the race as he ran into interference right from the start till he got clear approaching the final bend. Lion had to be ridden out to win from Leap of Faith and Order Order. There was a cluster finish for the minor placings with a nose each separating the second, third and fourth-placed horses.

Eshwer trained Rapunzel proved too superior in the 1200 metres Tarapur Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Trevor had Rapunzel dictate the terms from the outside draw and the favourite skipped clear in the straight to win by a widening margin of three lengths over Dream Star and Dancing Blues. The latter beat Tzar by a whisker to save place money. The lower division of the race saw last start winner Mint pull off record an encore. The Inayathulla trainee led from the start and despite drifting out under pressure, had enough legs to win by a shade over a length. Favourite Hukum was a tame second ahead of Be Bold.
