Titus wins feature despite a clumsy ride

By: Tippu Sultan   November 11 , 2018

Donald Netto trained Titus barely managed to win the 1200 metres Chief Justice Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 58 to 78, the feature event of Sunday`s Hyderabad races. Titus should have been a comprehensive winner but for the inadequacies of jockey Kiran Naidu who nearly messed up by banging the rails inside the final 100 metres and then was all at sea. The momentum took the favourite past the post ahead of late rallying Super Dart. The winner had to survive an objection to keep the race.

Asteria was taken on a start to finish mission by jockey Umesh. Titus was sluggish at the start but quickly improved to race alongside the front-runner. Inside the final 350 metres, Titus cruised past Asteria but in the process of doing so, slightly cramped the front-runner. Titus was lugging in and jockey Kiran was unable to get the horse to race on an even keel and brushed the rails which caused the horse to lose its rhythm. Super Dart who had many lengths to cover on the favourite, came home with a rush and very nearly benefitted by the misfortune suffered by the favourite as a result of lack of control exercised by its jockey. Titus managed to put his head in front at the post. Asteria was third. Jockey Umesh who rode Asteria put an objection against Kiran for squeezing him inside the final 350 metres and again coming on to him close home which cost him the race. The fact of the matter was that Titus was infinitely superior to Asteria and the filly had no ghost of a chance of beating the favourite. The interference was not so severe as to warrant for the Stewards to take the race away and hand it on a platter to a default horse. The objection was predictably overruled.

The lower division of the Chief Justice Trophy had a strong contender in Amazing Response from the stables of R H Sequeira. There was inspired support for Prince Caspian to break the sequence of listless performance and have a bold show. Amazing Response duly obliged albeit suffering a scare from Southern Promise who rallied strongly but fell short in the end. Newport was third. Prince Caspian was under pressure to keep pace and eventually finished in the ruck.

Sequeira had another winner through debutant Roll Call who won the 1100 metres Beginners Plate, a race for maiden two-year-olds. Jockey Sandesh who came in place of Akshay Kumar who had gone home to attend on his ailing mother, had no problem in steering Roll Call to victory as the progeny of Whatsthescript showed that she was ready for the fray by taking control of the proceedings in the stretch and staved off the late challenge of Giethorn to land the spoils. Born Greek was the firm favourite as he had the benefit of a race run but he was not good enough for this company and finished a poor third.

Mir Faiyaz Ali Khan trained New State was lucky to pull through in the 1200 metres Srisailam Cup, a race for horses rated 26 to 46. Raw apprentice Surya Prakash was not up to the task of delivering the goods on Handsome Boy who despite feeble help, finished on strongly only to miss the berth narrowly. Handsome Boy was a good thing beat. Cymbal lost the runner-up berth by a whisker to Handsome Boy who ended up as the favourite from a higher quote.

The 1200 metres Deccan Star Plate, a race for horses rated 42 to 62, saw a five-horse finish, with Star Gazer nosing out Southern Crown. Southern Crown had the first run on his opponents and was strongly challenged by Star Gazer, Shaquille, Miss Lilly and Athenaeus. Star Gazer managed to get the nod in the bobbing of heads in the battle of two long shots. Shaquille saved place money by edging out Miss Lilly and favourite Athenaeus who perhaps lost a winning opportunity because of the quality of ride offered.

Robin Reddy`s Red Bullet had failed in his runaway tactics last time out but made amends over a six-furlong trip in the Grand Entry Plate, a race for horses rated up to 30. Red Bullet bolted to the front and was so far ahead of the rest by the final furlong that his win was assured long way from home. Fancied Heaven Can Wait made a late dash to take the second place ahead of Hammer.
